Default Clare Short resigns as Labour MP

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6069710.stm

Quote:
Clare Short has resigned as a Labour MP and will sit as an independent for the remainder of this parliament.
Ms Short has already said she will quit as an MP at the next general election.

In a letter to Labour's chief whip, the Birmingham Ladywood MP accuses Tony Blair of telling "half-truths and deceits to get us to war in Iraq".

The former Cabinet minister also accused the government of being "arrogant and error prone" and repeated her call for a hung parliament.

Ms Short told BBC News 24 that it took her a week to write the letter: "It was a very sad, big thing for me".

I don't like her politics, but she's done the right thing.

She would make a massive impact if she joined one of the smaller parties.

I'm not so sure, didn't she back track on something a few months ago?
I can't remember what it was ops: but I know I thought at the time it made her "soiled goods"!

I'll eat my hat if she joins UKIP. I don't own a hat but I'd buy one specially.

I don't see her joining another party. Respect or Green seem the only possibilities. I don't think she'll join the ego known as Galloway and his band of Muslim/Trotskyite followers. And as she is not known for her environmental credentials it would be a huge surprise for her to join the Greens.

Possibly she could join up with Dai Davies MP, the Independent winner of the recent Blaenau Gwent byelection, to form an Ex-Labour Anti-Blair Party. Then again, would there be any point?

According to this report, what Short really wants to do now is to campaign for electoral reform. She thinks a hung parliament would be a good idea as it would be a situation in which electoral reform stood a chance.

Default 'Hung' parliament is a dilemma for europhile Lib Dims

The europhile political establishment have gone remarkably quiet of late on their former pet subject of electoral reform. Clearly, they were shaken when proportional (PR) voting allowed UKIP to score stunning victories in the middle of 2004 (EU Elections), and push (in vote numbers) the Liberal 'Democrats' into fourth place.

In the event of a 'hung' parliament, it should be pointed out that there will be - apart from Campbell's Fiberal Dims - up to 30 or so MPs in smaller parties who will also have their 'price' in talks with Labour or the Conservatives.

What a quandary for the europhile Liberal 'Democrats' - they will have to pursue their campaign for PR (in a 'hung' parliament) knowing full well that the chief beneficiary of PR voting at a General Election could well be UKIP - and not them!

The scenario of a 'hung' parliament is no longer an opportunity for the Liberal Dims - it is a dilemma  .
