Default Recreation of Middlesex as a Political County

Just to confirm that the English Democrat support the recreation of Middlesex as a County.

As a minimum the re-created County would include:-

ENFIELD
EDGWARE
HARROW
NORTHWOOD
PINNER
RUISLIP
STANMORE
WEMBLEY
ASHFORD
BRENTFORD
FELTHAM
HAMPTON
HOUNSLOW
ISLEWORTH
SHEPPERTON
STAINES
SUNBURY-ON-THAMES
TEDDINGTON
TWICKENHAM
GREENFORD
HAYES
NORTHOLT
SOUTHALL
UXBRIDGE
WEST DRAYTON

Although if you go back far enough Middlesex covered ALL of London North of the Thames (Areas to the South of the Thames were in either Kent or Surrey)

English Democrats are dedicated to promoting awareness of the continuing importance of the 40 historic (or traditional) Counties of England. EDP believes that the Counties are an important part of the history, geography and cultural life of England and contends that England needs a fixed popular geography, one divorced from the ever changing names and areas of local government but, instead, one rooted in history, public understanding and commonly held notions of cultural identity. EDP, therefore, seeks to fully re-establish the use of the Counties as the standard popular geographical reference frame of England and to further encourage their use as a basis for social, sporting and cultural activities.

1 Bedfordshire
2 Berkshire
3 Buckinghamshire
4 Cambridgeshire

The "This England" magazine has in the past advertised maps for sale of the original counties, with some historical data attached, which can be framed for wall hanging.

In Merseyside, I always try to ensure that all my addresses include the word Lancashire at the end, just to stress the point.

They don't like it up 'em, you know. (sharp points that is)

interestingly, the 'historical counties' still exist as geographical units - they have never been superceded.

The 'new' counties are administrative units only, suposedly.

Quote:
From 1888 to 1965 local government "administrative counties" were closely based upon the traditional Counties. The last 40 years have seen numerous local government reforms: a modern local government map now bears little resemblence to the traditional Counties. However, the Government has always maintained that local government changes do not actually directly affect the Counties themselves. Despite such re-assurances, the tendency for the media, map-makers, publishers etc. to use local government areas as a basis for popular geography has obscured the identities of the Counties.
see http://www.abcounties.co.uk/

I support the ED's in this initiative. Well done!

For a nice colour map of the counties, see http://www.abcounties.co.uk/counties/map.htm

It all sounds good but as someone who lives in Middlesex I dont see how you could possibly do this.

Only West and North Middlesex still exist in any way (postal address, names of hospitals etc. )

The bit in between is and has been for a long time firmly in London and most people who live there now have probably never even heard of Middlesex and couldn't give a t*** anyway.

You must be monumentally bored.

Default Bring back Middlesex and proper county boundaries

This all came up for discussion on the forum last year and I received support from most for the return of Middlesex.

Just a few points:

1. Middlesex already has official, legal status as a county. The county was abolished - but not the actual county. The county is represented (during visits to Middlesex by H. M. The Queen) its own Lord Lieutenant (who is first to greet the Monarch upon her arrival in the county).

2. Middlesex exists as a 'postal county' (western Middlesex commonly known as West London) and also Enfield.

3. The formal status of Middlesex as a county is confirmed in the Lord Lieutenancy Act.

As I've said before, I support a return not only to the pre-1974 county boundaries across the UK (before the europhile traitor Heath messed them all up) but a return to the boundaries which existed before the artificial Greater London area was established in 1965.

Therefore the artificial 'Greater London' area would be scrapped in order to bring back Middlesex. Middlesex boroughs such as Harrow, Richmond-on-Thames (northern part - Twickenham), Hounslow, Ealing, Enfield, Brent (Wembley) and Hillingdon (Heathrow-Uxgridge-Ruislip) would be formally 're-classified' as Middlesex - and not London - Boroughs.

In other words, Potters Bar (presently in Hertfordshire) would be returned to Middlesex for both postal and administrative purposes. Bromley (presently a London Borough) would come under the jurisdiction of Kent County Council again and Croydon would return to Surrey, becoming its largest town/city. Kingston-Upon-Thames, Richmond-Upon-Thames and Sutton-Cheam (all presently in London) would also return to Surrey. Havering and Redbridge (part of London) would become part of the Essex County Council again. Names such as 'Humberside', 'West Midlands', 'Avon', 'Merseyside' and Tyne and Wear' (invented by the disastrous Heath regime) would be wpied from the map of our country. Sutton Coldfield (now in Birmingham) would return to Warwickshire (as would Coventry) and Wolverhamton/Dudley would go back where they belong - to Staffordshire.

Whilst setting up the Middlesex County Council may not get public backing - pulling the Middlesex parts of 'Greater London' out of the 'Greater London' area would win wide support. Power should be returned from the Livingstone (i.e. red-controlled) Greater London Authority and returned to the Middlesex Boroughs (Harrow, Staines, Enfield etc.). Road signs should be placed at all entry/exit points to/from Middlesex clearly displaying the words "Welcome to Middlesex".

Both UKIP and the English Democrats should set up a joint campaign to achieve all this.

Actually quite a lot of Birmingham (not just Sutton Coldfield) would return to Warwickshire with another large chuck going into Worcestershire and a small area going into Staffordshire.
