Default Only a third vote in anti-UKIP Cameron's 'core values' poll

More news of David Cameron, the anti-UKIP and pro-EU leader of the Conservative Party:

From BBC 2 Television Ceefax, page 104 (analogue), 19.9.2006 at 6.54 pm

‘Cameron to announce ballot result’

The result of a ballot of Conservative members on a new set of core values to be announced by David Cameron.

The Tory leader is expected to say a sizeable majority voted in favour of adopting the Built To Last document.

However, the BBC has learned that less than a third of the party’s 250, 000 members returned their ballot papers.

The document sets out the aims and values which Mr. Cameron wants the Conservatives to take into the next election.

Britannist adds: There has been criticism from opponents of David Cameron (and some from those against the Conservative Party in general) that the Core Values statement is meaningless and that there was no alternative to vote for instead.

The BBC report (above) also claims the Conservative Party membership is 250, 000. The official Conservative Party website has said that, under the leadership of David Cameron, the party’s membership has reached 300, 000.

The membership of the Labour Party is 198, 000 and still falling. It was 409, 000 when Blair won the 1997 General Election. The europhile Liberal Dims are on 76, 000 members (down from 100, 000 in 1997).

Default Almost three quarters did not vote

From BBC 1 Television Ceefax, analogue page 120 at 6.52 pm on 19.9.2006

‘Ballot shows unity, says Cameron’

David Cameron has been backed by more than nine out of ten of Conservative members who voted on his mini-manifesto statement of aims and values.

But nearly three quarters of party members (73%) did not vote.

Of the 65, 000 who did take part, 92.7% voted in favour of Mr. Cameron’s vision and 7.3% voted against.

The Tories (Conservatives) said the result showed the party was united and said the turnout was better than in a similar vote in 2000 in which 16% of members took part.

From ITV 1 Teletext, analogue page 315, on 19.9.2006 at 6.58 pm:

‘Cameron hails ‘changed’ party’

David Cameron has hailed the success of his referendum on Conservative aims and values – despite only a quarter of party member bothering to vote.

The Tory leader won 92.7% backing for his ‘Built to Last’ mission statement, with only 7.3% voicing opposition

Mr. Cameron said the result proved the party had “changed” but Labour chairwoman Hazel Blears said the low turnout was a “humiliation.”

Loath as I am to agree with a socialist, Blears is right.
This is more a case of the party not voting in order that their leader doesn't suffer a humiliating defeat rather than a ringing endorsement of Blue Labour policies.
