For any sentient animal to have his/her brains mashed to pulp is far from being humane. Some people in public office, though, have over the years proved to be only sensitive when they themselves are the subject of attack, whether physical or verbal!

Default Public against seal clubbing

I agree Arden. I'm quite sure the majority of the public oppose seal clubbing.

If you had a rat in your wheelybin would you stop the pest control officer from despatching it with a piece of 4 by 2 ?

Strangely, Helmer looks like a very old seal.

I'm disgusted with Helmer if he said that.

Did he really say it though?

Default Clubbing of seals not a vote winner

If he did say/write it - then it is not exactly a vote winner is it? Some people think that all animal rights people are scruffy leftists. In fact, many 'on the right' feel very uncomfortable about things like the clubbing of seals. I know one UKIP member who is politically 'right' but also pro-moderate animal rights.

I like rodents, I keep gerbils, and I happen to like rats too. Rats have to be controlled, but pest control officers don't go around bashing rats with 4 be 2s.

If Christina doesn't mind - I'll also try to answer Brian's point by pointing out that you cannot compare a disgusting rat (which deserves to be clubbed on the head) and a seal - which does not.

It never fails to amaze me how 'man' is sometimes cruel to its mammal friends such as seals. There are even cases of cruelty reported against dolphins - considered by many to be the most friendly of all species to humans.

Pet rats are as intelligent as small dogs, so wild rats should be controlled in a humane way.

Rats today are not the same as brought the plague with their fleas. They were Rattus Rattus (black rat or ship's rat). Rattus Norvegicus (Norway rat) took over later.

Rats in Brussels are the worst. Many are to be found in the EU Commission  .
