They have changed all of the roads around here to give priority access to the Bloody toll road. They have built the A38 straight through an island so the A5 via a new Hints bypass can access the toll road quicker. The Sutton bypass, which was one road, now has two islands so that people can get on and off. Strange all of these changes happening once the toll road was finished. By the way I am totally against the idea of using the hard shoulder to save money what price is a life worth. As for the lay-bys every 500 yards are theses going to be long enough to take a car towing a caravan and a recovery vehicle which wont be able to get to you, as it will be stuck in traffic. What happens when emergency vehicles want to get to the scene of an accident? Surely it would be cheaper to build one extra lane than thousands of lay-bys |

It's not a case of saving a life.
When the traffic is busy (ie bumper to bumper), then they let the hardh shoulder be used to give them a bit of temporary bandwidth. IF a car breaks down, then if it can free wheel, limp into one of the bays they put every 500 yards, then the lane they are broken down in becomes a hard shoulder for a few yards again, just like normal roads do now! We aren't talking about free flowing traffic zooming around, but busy times!

If they think they can react and close off the hard shoulder lane quicker that a tired motorist can drive into the back of someone they will learn the hard way. |

What, like you have to do on Dual carridge ways etc now?
I don't like the idea of it being done at those speeds though, there doens't seem to be a huge amount of point if it is flowing freely enough to have those speeds.

The reason it will not be popular is it isn't the right thing.
It's something Neo Labout might come out with, with their control freakery. As usual getting the balance right it most important. A tough, real test to start with is fair. Maybe there is a case for some extra testing when you hit 60 or something, but anything more than that is too close to the nanny state.
