Default Tax rebate for 'green households'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4800726.stm

Quote:
If all 880,000 homes in the 16 local authorities involved took part in the scheme, 193,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emmissions a year would be prevented, said Mr Morley.

A home-owner must install subsidised cavity wall insulation through British Gas before they can apply for the council tax reduction.

A spokesman for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said if a homeowner spent £175 to get the insulation installed, they would receive an annual average energy saving of £110.

I fully expect a British Gas director to have given a few mil to the Labour party and a Lordship will be winging his ways too soon.

Why limit it to British Gas? You would think people would WANT to insulate their homes, if they saved money every year in heating bills. Should subsidies from my tax be used to bribe others INTO phpbb_doing it, via the government approved source?

What about all those small companies that will now see their business dive, as people look for the subsidised British Gas option?

So, what if the homeowner has already got cavity wall insulation and doesn't need British Gas to install any? Does that homeowner get a reduction in council tax?

This stinks (hardly a first in Blair's Britain).
