Mark Oaten tonight resigned as the Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman after he was confronted by the News of the World over an affair with a rent boy.

In a statement the 41-year-old father of two apologised for the “embarrassment” he had caused to his family and party.

News of the World managing editor Stuart Kuttner said that Mr Oaten’s announcement came after he was confronted with details of the affair with the 23-year-old rent boy by the paper’s reporters.

The Winchester MP Mark Oaten, who was a contender for the leadership of the party until he stood down days ago, made the following statement to the News of the World:

"I have stood down as Home Affairs spokesman for the Party.

"I would like to apologise for errors of judgement in my personal behaviour and for the embarrassment caused firstly to my family, but also to my friends, my constituents and my Party.

"I will not be commenting further at this time and would now ask for some space and personal privacy for me and my family."

The investigation reveals Mr Oaten had a lengthy relationship with a rent boy then aged 23.

Mr Oaten, who is married with two children, resigned after seeing the News of the World’s evidence earlier today.

Alex,what do you mean by "news of the Sunday"?

It matters a lot to me if you.as a UKIP Member want to point out a "reason or excuse" why he should resign or why he should say how sorry he is to his family and all those who are/have been involved with him.

This type of sexual deprevation is very common within the leaders of everything.

He has owned-up,addmitted,and said he is sorry to everyone,THAT,is easy to do,he,and all of those of the same ilk must be sought out and removed from every level of our society and lives.

Nothing less than this will do.

If I thought for one moment that this was UKIP Policy, I would resign immediately... I really hope you are trying to put over some bad taste joke because if you are serious then I do not know if I could remain in a party that has views like yours...

I agree that he should have resigned, in the same way as I would expect a heterosexual MP should resign if he (or she) was discovered to be having sex with prostitutes, but to suggest homosexuals should be "sought out and removed from every level of our society and lives" makes you an intolerant bigot, the worst type of redneck and a throw back to the bad old days.......hang your head in shame and retract your statement immediately.....
