I wasn't defending him, however I question that validity of the source. I want to know more about what he is supposed to have done; he hasn't denied what the News of the World has said, however it hasn't been published yet.

What, being gay or using prostitutes? If the latter, then fine. If the former, not fine.

Again - do you mean Homosexuals or people who use Prostitutes? I hasten to add that the supposed rent boy in question is 23.

With an abnormal amount of "Gaye's in all the three main political parties compared with the rest of society, I am a little worried that taking part in "Gaye" activity will be made compulsory! I am an Adam & Eve man, not an Adam & Steve man!

So kernow should we have a witch hunt and expel gay lesbian and bisexual UKIP members?

Perhaps we should make that a question on UKIP membership forms?

For Oaten to have resigned there must be more than things that are acceptable in a liberal society.

I don't care what consenting adults do in private. I'm most definitely not gay, and if I didn't have a regular girlfriend would have no qualms about paying for sex (society has no right to make me or anybody else celibate if we don't want to be). I have known, as friends, many homosexuals. I couldn't do what they do, but if they do it in private clubs, bars or their own homes that's okay. I don't want to have the details rammed down my throat (ha, ha ,ha  ), but privacy is everything. I once sat, in theatrical digs where I lived, and whiled away a couple of hours talking to the 20 something rent-boy who lived with a well known 50+ actor (who also fancied me - I've not watched Coronation street since!!!) I felt sorry for the rent-boy; he wasn't gay, but was being paid more money than I could have dreamed of. Life is strange.

The thing is, surely, liberal minded people accept homosexuality as something not to resign over. Likewise using an adult prostitute, of whatever sex, is okay in a liberal society. Many people have affairs; if everybody who was unfaithful to their spouse was barred from high public office there wouldn't be that many people left to run for Parliament. Three in a bed sex is something I've missed out on, but many people I have met claim to have indulged. Again it's hardly a resigning matter.

What I want to know is 'what has Oaten done that makes him unfit to be a LibDem spokesman?'

It's not about being bisexual, it's the deceit and hypocrisy.

Maybe he'll be fine, who knows. Tom Driberg got away with lots of stuff in his day. While he was discreet, he never set out to fool anyone about his lifestyle.

AFAIK he's only resigned from his front bench position.

The BBC's just updated its story here.

No, he's only resigned from the front bench.

It gives a new meaning to home affairs spokesman.

I find the whole episode disgusting and makes me mistrust ALL polticians even more than I did before. I feel sorry for his wife, it must have been an awful shock.

It's perfectly correct to say that the gay are rampant and do help each other by promotions up the ranks within company's.The same guy condemned a judge for doing the same as himself. Some of those who support the gay thing would not be so supportive if one of them started to bother a family member of theirs. Most who say gays are good or ok say it to be cool and make big noises when someone else says they are a scourge on us.It has been a big danger to the country in the past when gays are MP or something like that.
