Default KILROY QUITS VERITAS - NOW S** **F FOR GOOD TANGERINE MAN

Kilroy quits as Veritas leader

'We tried and failed,' concedes MEP after leaving third political party

Matthew Tempest and agencies
Friday July 29, 2005

Robert Kilroy-Silk, former leader of Veritas.

Chatshow host turned MEP Robert Kilroy-Silk tonight quit as leader of the fringe party Veritas, which he set up less than six months ago.
He had earlier joined the UK Independence party and was elected MEP for the East Midlands in 2004, but left after a failed leadership bid.

The former BBC presenter, who entered public life as a Labour MP in the 1970s, now faces calls to quit his European parliament post. Tonight the MEP, who was facing a leadership challenge from disillusioned Veritas members, said he was standing down immediately having "tried and failed" to change the British political system.

Leaderless and rudderless! I don't think Kilroy helped anybody by being so quick to show that he wanted to be a leader. In politics it is best to allow your acolytes to promote YOU because they want to, rather than "promoting" yourself on a membeship that hardly knows you. Although Kilroy was well known, not that many knew him for his politics. He allowed TV fame to cloud his political judgement. It wasn't that great in the Labour Party, but he could have done some good things for UKIP. He couldn't do much for Veritas!

It's all a pity and a great shame!

I agree, he didn't try hard with either UKIP or Veritas and has now ended up without a career, a party and a job and probably some fatwa to boot. He let a lot of people down.

The silly thing is that he put in a hell of a lot of work for Veritas going to sparce speaking engagements around the country, which ultimately proved futile. He also lost income from the Sunday Express and probably elsewhere. He has taken a lot of flak, but as a UKIP member I can't say there was much he said that I would disagree with.

In UKIP he could simply have bided his time, chivied things up behind the scenes, really helped the anti-EU cause. He had an existing party structure in UKIP making the really boring things happen (not well, but a hell of a lot better than Veritas could possible manage from scratch).

His one minute harangue in the EU Parliament has got to be an all time political classic.

Didn't Bob Dylan write a song, made famous by the Byrds, Hey Mr Tangerine man?

(All together Now, on three, 1-2-3)

Hey Mr. Tangerine Man play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey Mr. Tangerine Man play a song for me
In a jingle-jangle morning I'll come following you

Though I know that evening's empire has returned INTO phpbb_sand
Vanished from my hand left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping
My weariness amazes me I'm branded on my feet
I have no one to meet and the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming

Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship
My senses have been stripped my hands can't feel to grip
My toes too numb to step wait only for my boot heels to be wanderin'
I'm ready to go anywhere I'm ready for to fade
INTO phpbb_my own parade cast your dancing spell my way I promise to go under it

Though you might hear laughin' spinnin' swingin' madly across the sun
It's not aimed at anyone it's just escapin' on the run
And but for the sky there are no fences facing

And if you hear vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme
To your tambourine in time it's just a ragged clown behind
I wouldn't pay it any mind it's just a shadow you're seein' that he's chasing

Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind
Down the foggy ruins of time far past the frozen leaves
The haunted frightened trees out to the windy beach
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow

Yes to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free
Silhouetted by the sea circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow

Prophetic or What?

Default Kilroy's greatest moment...

EUBlues wrote yesterday (posting above/or on previous page):

His (Kilroy's) one minute harangue in the EU Parliament has got to be an all time political classic.

My reply is:

I agree. Kilroy's speech was brilliant and left Barroso (EU Commission President) and others red-faced. What a great and humorous orator. The speech is surely the best anti-EU speech yet delivered in Brussels.

Kilroy's breach with UKIP was very sad.

News of his departure as Veritas leader (yesterday 29.7.2005) ranks as the most important and significant event in eurosceptic and anti-EU politics this year - apart from the French/Dutch referendum results.

Of course, RKS could be sitting back now in Spain, sipping a cool Sangria counting a large bundle of notes thinking

Mission Accomplished.

Best hatchet job on the anti-EU movement I have seen in some time.

Tony
Does that mean I have to pay royalties to Eclectech or Dylan?

Let's not forget that RKS is still an MEP and as such is/can still serve our cause in the anti EU Movement. He may just turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to UKIP and Veritas who knows? We will just have to wait and see which way he blows. The LAB/LIB/DEM/CONS could come under a sustained onslaught by RKS both in the UK and the EU theatres. The stage is set, lights, camera, action, RE-ENTER ROBERT KILROY-SILK MEP!
