Default Tony Bennett quits Veritas

In answer to presterjohn, I sent this note out by e-mail to VERITAS members on Thursday last (12 May):

"Dear VERITAS members,

I wish to infom you that on Tuesday I gave formal notice to Robert KIlroy-Silk and Acting Party Secretary Michael Harvey that I have decided to resign my membership of VERITAS, for personal reasons

Tony Bennett
01279 635789"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In answer to those who have 'phoned here asking for more details, I have explained that I spent time helping to found and establish the party, worked for its development and stood in the General Election as a candidate.

All of this has taken much time away from my main role whch is to deal effectively with Robert's constituency correspondence and enquiries and indeed the correspondence, e-mails and telephone calls which come in from all over the country every time he appears on TV or radio. Quite a backlog has inevitably built up.

I decided that the additional work of being a Party member and dealing with enquiries and indeed representations from Party members as well was too much. Plus many enquiries come in here for VERITAS, either via Robert's website or through Directory Enquiries; I can now truthfully say I am not in VERITAS and direct the enquiries elsewhere

You know what they say; when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

I am in my final year of my Masters Degree at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston. I stood as UKIP PPC in Stretford & Urmston (part of Manchester where I'm from).

I did 20 hours a week of study, including some private study, was a member of 4 university societies, and the treasurer of one. Yet I still made time to get the train (I dont have a driving lciense) to go to Stretford & Urmston and flyer, and appear in hustings meetings. In fact I travelled to Stretford for a hustings meeting one night which I only had four hours notice of. Then I came back at 20 past midnight.

Stamina is one problem this UKIP member doesnt have!

I was going to say "But then, you're helluva lot younger" but why does one assume that uni folks are all aged 18/25?

I hope you get good results.

Anyone who knows the work rate of Tony Bennett will not accuse him of lack of stamina. He's done more than most for the eurosceptic cause - he stemmed the rise of metric signs and for the privilege was locked in a cell and endured criminal prosecution before winning on appeal. He was the driving force behind the successful CREC campaign which printed hundreds of thousand of postcards which were distributed nationwide and sent to the Queen by the sackload demanding a referendum on the EU. He is a mine of information on every aspect of the EU. It's a shame that he left UKIP and he must have his own reasons for now leaving Veritas. But lack of stamina is not the reason.
