Default Next Tory Leader

Who will be the next Tory leader, and what would it mean for UKIP?

If it is Kenneth Clarke, it will be good for UKIP as the grassroots will be horrified. They didn't vote for him last time when they had a chance.

David Davis is supposedly a EUsceptic, but I think he will take the pragmatic view and want to stay in the EU, but it will cloud the issue in the mind of the membership

Liam Fox is not strong enough to be leader, and he's a scot.

None of the above.

I'd go for Tony Blair.

Who, I haven't a clue.

I expect it will be Ken Clarke.

If it is Liam Fox there's no chance they will win until they ditch him, he's just not good leadership material and as for David Davis he will be a competent leader, prob the next one after this next one methinks.

As I see it the Tories can go 2 ways:

1. Elect someone who the party will not object to: Liam Fox.

In a year or so they will ditch him and go for David Davis but the EU constitution vote will already have been won (by Labour), and the UK condemned to a nasty fate.

2. Elect someone who will split the party: Ken Clarke or David Davis.

If David Davis is chosen he will have an option whether to be patriotic or whether to put party before country. I suspect he will choose the latter. The EU Philes will ****** off and join the Lib Dems because it will still be seen as taking an anti-EU stance even though it will not be strong enough to make a difference. Then the constitution vote will be won by Labour and the UK damned.

If Ken Clarke is chosen the EU Sceptics will break free and some will join us. Then we can win the EU constitution No campaign and delay the EU progect.

However the only elected parties will all be europhile and we will have a very difficult time ahead.

You should have an option “None of the above”.

And god I certainly hope it’s none of those three!
I do though fear that it will be David Davis, mainly because he is somewhat popular, and really there are no other real candidates for leadership – Although I’d like George, he is a bit young, and I don’t think Alan Duncan would ever get a real chance, and people would be afraid of Malcolm due to his part in the Major government, so who do we have left?

So … simply because there isn’t anyone else, I believe Davis will become leader.

It is terrible that there is no-one in the Tory party who stands out as a future leader. They are all anonymous to the general public. And I think to most of those who voted Tory.

Roger Knapman will probably be more widely recognised than the next Tory leader.

hehe – A bit of wishful thinking that Roger would be more recognisable than the next Tory leader!

From all those who voted Tory that I’ve talked with, I’ve found that most want Davis to become the next leader – If only they knew the problems that would cause the party though!
