Default Tory plan to salvage Britain's fisheries

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main...09/ixhome.html

Tomorrow will see an event for which this column has been waiting for 12 years, ever since I first began reporting on the social, economic and ecological catastrophe of the European Union's common fisheries policy (CFP). I have probably written more articles than any other national newspaper journalist about the astonishing bureaucratic disaster which, in the name of European political integration, has seen not only the wholesale destruction of Britain's fishing industry but also the devastation of what were once the richest fishing waters in the world.
Didn't see that in McShanes what the EU does leaflet!

Quote:
Discarding would be banned. Fisheries management would be taken down to a local level and run on a "days at sea" system, to ensure a constant balance between fishing effort and local stocks. The use of sophisticated selective fishing gear would be mandatory rather than, as so often under the CFP, discouraged or made illegal.
Yes good idea, problem is the EU won;t let it happen. Thus there is only one option, full withdrawal from the EU, ASAP!

I paste below a letter that has gone to regional and national papers for your information.

Mick Mahon has particularly requested that our letter writers get busy with their local papers with either the same proposal in your own words, or with letters of support if you do see the original letter in any paper(s).

Our hope is that the EU will agree, but if they don't........well, we know what to say then, don't we!!

Letter to WMN 07/01/2005

Dear Sir,

Re: Tsunami aid and fish

We have been wondering how the UK might be better able to help the unfortunate peoples of the Indian Ocean area who have suffered so much from the effects of the Tsunami on Boxing Day.

It occurred to us that if the fish caught above quota by our UK fishermen were to be landed and sold, we might then send the proceeds, or a substantial proportion thereof, to the appropriate Aid Agency and the local fishing industries.

At present, the EU seems to be somewhat slow in acting on the crisis, whilst our proposal could be enacted immediately and turned INTO phpbb_cash, rather than promises. It seems sensible that rather than having to dump dead fish back INTO phpbb_the sea, our plan would improve the fisherman’s lot, the recipients lot, and the consumer, but we will have to see if the EU will relax it’s quota system for a good, sensible and humanitarian cause.

Yours faithfully

Roger Knapman, MEP SW & Gibralter, UKIP Party Leader

Graham Booth MEP SW & Gibraltar, UKIP

Mick Mahon, UKIP PPC Falmouth & Camborne

The only way to protect our fishing industry is to leave the EU. There is no other option.

What a tosser. An eccentric idea from an eccentric man.

Think it through. Logistics, cost, practicalities? ZERO.
