Ananova:
Half million OAPs 'under-fed'

Half a million older people in Britain are suffering the effects of not eating enough, campaigners have warned.

Age Concern said that as millions of people overindulge this Christmas, 500,000 over-65s are "under-nourished" and risking ill-health by not eating a proper diet.

The charity said one in five pensioners lives in poverty and many find it hard to afford basic living costs such as food and heating.

They also warned that 22,000 older people are likely to die from cold-related illnesses this winter.

The oldest people appear to be most at risk from not eating enough.

Age Concern said that 15 per cent of over-85s are unable to prepare a main meal for themselves, with 38 per cent of these receiving no regular help or access to hot food.

They said that struggling with a disability also makes cooking a meal a major challenge for many older people.

Gordon Lishman, director-general of Age Concern, said: "Almost two million pensioners live in poverty and as a result many don't have enough money to pay for necessities that most of us take for granted.

"It is scandalous that, in the 21st century, so many pensioners are facing ill-health because of an inadequate diet.

"The state pension must be increased so that all older people have enough money to cover basic living costs such as food and heating their homes during the winter."

And, if we join the Euro, our pension fund will go INTO phpbb_the great European Pot ! Of course, this will assist the French and Germans, who have already bankrupted their own pension funds.
Labour promotes itself as a caring party !!!!!!!!!

AlgyPug - can you reference that please? First I've heard of it. Biscuitman ought to be in a position to comment too, given his expertise on pensions.
