1981 85,800 + 8.5% (1971-81)
1991 91,401 + 6.5% (1981-91)
2001 102, 661 +12.3% (1991-2001)
2002 104,756
2004 ????

The increases since 1970 are not internal, but due to influx of folks from outside, mostly young couples who both work, and who both commute out of Ashford.

If thousands of folks with jobs move INTO phpbb_Ashford then the percentage of unemployed folks in Ashford will reduce - without the actual number of unemployed reducing at all.

'Tis the same logic which is used when 'tis said the number of poor folk in Falluja has decreased during the last couple of months thanks to the efforts of the U.S. Military ....

Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics!

Old saying, still relevant. The whole shift to relying on these "statistics" really bothers me. They are massaged and manipulated from the first level, all the way to the top. Rubbish in, Rubbish out.

I have the same argument every year with our managers, and their answer is we have to have something, it's the best we have.

Well I would personaly rather have nothing than rubbish! There are certain stats that are fact, number of people claiming benefit, number of people in employment etc, they are the only stats I am interested in.
