No. Not if the police do their job and use their powers to remove licenses.

It's another example of the 'easy line' the police take nowadays. It's easier to book drunks in the street after the event than to pro-actively police and enter licensed premises.

Police taking away the licence?

Now if only they were the only ones who had the power to grant them.

They do. The police can apply for suspension of licence. The police are referred to when licenses are applies for.

That's a strange answer.

You said that they do grant them and then explained how they don't!

They don't grant the licence - someone else does. That's my point.

Eight? Good grief! How can they afford it?
That's a whole gallon!
One is enough for me ... unless 'tis milk.
Walking INTO phpbb_a pub and ordering a pint of milk is a fun thing to do.

Actually it was two answers, albeit in the wrong order. To clarify:
Quote:
An application for a premises licence must be made to the relevant licensing authority. (blah blah) ..... require an applicant to give notice of his application to each responsible authority
responsible authority means police and fire services, amongst others. Hence the police have a say in the granting of licenses in the first instance.

For an existing license,
Quote:
Where a premises licence has effect, an interested party or a responsible authority may apply to the relevant licensing authority for a review of the licence
For rapid closure
Quote:
A senior police officer may make a closure order in relation to any relevant premises if he reasonably believes that-
(a) there is, or is likely imminently to be, disorder on, or in the vicinity of and related to, the premises and their closure is necessary in the interests of public safety, or
(b) a public nuisance is being caused by noise coming from the premises and the closure of the premises is necessary to prevent that nuisance.
(2) A closure order is an order under this section requiring relevant premises to be closed for a period not exceeding 24 hours beginning with the coming INTO phpbb_force of the order.
(3) In determining whether to make a closure order in respect of any premises, the senior police officer must have regard, in particular, to the conduct of each appropriate person in relation to the disorder or nuisance

Pasting legislation does not conceal the fact the the police do not grant licences.

They may recommend or oppose...they do not grant.

sorry - I was clarifying:
Quote:

I did not mean to infer the police actually grant the licenses. I wish they would use their powers more wisely at the point of cause though than allowing town centres at nights to be no-go areas. (I saw the result of a girl student pushed through a plate glass window one friday night...)
