Default For Blair there is no such thing as legal principle

There is private, political glee in government circles that the raft of illiberal measures announced in the Queen's speech has seen the Tories well and truly scuppered. It is now impossible for Michael Howard to find a set of sustainable policies to the right of Tony Blair. As a Labour peer of recent vintage explained to me, "politics is about winning". Principle is a second-order issue.
Call me old fashioned, but I thought that politics was all about making the country a better place. We expect our politicians to disagree on how to achieve that, but we damn well expect them to act in the interests of the country. Once again a Labour figure has revealed the party's total contempt for the public.

What annoys me is they are using a noble cause of being tough on crime, to push through an agenda that is actualy tough on everyone. Criminals always find loopholes or gaps, if not they go for easy targets such as conning pensioners or robbing peoples houses. So the only people who suffer from an authortarian, nanny state are the mugs who play along the rules!
