Default Vacancies for GPs take longer to fill

Telegraph Article
Quote:
GP vacancies are taking longer to fill, according to figures released yesterday.

The GP Recruitment and Retention and Vacancy Survey 2004, from the Department of Health, said that in the year to March it took an average four and a half months to fill a vacancy in England and Wales, compared with three and a half in 2003.

Two years ago in the effort to boost GP numbers, £2,000 "golden hello" payments were made to doctors joining the least popular practices. The report says that 83 per cent of vacancies were filled in three months.

Dr Hamish Meldrum, the chairman of the British Medical Association's GPs committee, said: "The Government's own figures show that GP vacancies are taking longer to fill.

"This trend is very worrying, as there is already a dire shortage of family doctors across the UK."
