Howard gives protégé major election role

Sources said Mr Cameron, the Eton-educated MP for Witney, was central to Mr Howard's election plans and his thinking about the future.

He would coordinate Tory policies during the campaign, and have a central role promoting them on the media – a role which will pit him against Alan Milburn, the Blairite former health secretary.

It is also understood that one of Mr Cameron's friends, George Osborne, the 33-year-old MP for Tatton who is shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, will be pushed in the media during the campaign to convey a new and younger image for the party.

A younger image for the Tories? They are all old (30+) and mostly 80+. But at least the Eton-educated buffoon image is to be preserved . Perhaps they will wear mini skirts too...

Conservative Future is the largest youth group in the UK and the average age of their membership is only 1 year above Labours - 59 instead of 58.
