Default Human rights: faiths to be protected from discrimination

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/newspap...372517,00.html
Quote:
A DECADE of campaigning by faith communities had its reward when incitement to religious hatred was named as a criminal offence and religious discrimination was outlawed. Under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Bill — which will apply to England, Wales and Scotland — any action deemed to stir up such hatred could land the perpetrator in court.

The Bill will close a loophole in present laws, which cover colour, race, nationality or national or ethinic orgin, but not religion.

Disabled people will gain more rights, too, under a Discrimination Bill.

In one of the most contentious moves, an Equality Bill will set up a Commission for Equality and Human Rights to oversee the anti-discrimination laws.

The commission, which will promote equality and human rights as well as tackle discrimination on grounds of age, religion and sexual orientation, will replace the work of the Equal Opportunities Commission, the Disability Rights Commission and Commission for Racial Equality.

How about we treat people has individuals, and give them the protection that any person would expect, no matter what section of society they come from.

I hate all this legislating for loads of different groups, it causes resentment and inconsistancy in the laws that are derived from it.

Presumably, as usual, its principal purpose is to soften us up for the 'common judicial space' in Euroland, specifically in this case the crime of 'xenophobia'.
