It is a pity all those rabid anti hunting MPs, are completely silent about barbaric religious slaughter both Halal(Muslim) and Kosher (Jewish). I wrote to DEFRA in February 2003 to find out if religious slaughter was legal in the UK. Their reply staggered me, not so much that it was legal, but the shear numbers of animals involved. Over 200,000 animals are killed in the UK every week by having their throats cut without any pre stunning, to comply with the religious beliefs of the Muslim and Jewish communities in the UK. DEFRA would not give me any figures later than May 1999,(God knows how many now!) The figures for a 6 day period in May 1999 are:
Cattle..........181
Calves.........32
Sheep..........2174
Broilers.........211810
Turkeys.........427
Ducks............15
Total............227566
Without a doubt if UK Halal and Kosher butchers wore red coats and rode horses religious slaughter would have been banned a long time ago.
