Default North East Look To have Voted No

Sky News is reporting a heavy defeat for the yes campaign for regional government in the North East.

Splendid, well done to everyone involved in the No campaign. I look forward to Prescotts bitter face on the TV tommorow!

The first area through voted 50000 to 6000 how much more resounding can that be!

Director of yes4thenortheast, Ross Forbes, said he believed they were heading for a defeat.

Always one to leave things to the last minute (to check the efficiency of others) I went to cast my referendum vote at 5.45pm tonight at one of the 'Assistance and Delivery Points.' The one I went to was at Sunderland Civic Centre.

Postal Ballots...no problem.

I entered the foyer, Ballot Paper envelope in hand.

No-one at reception. No immediate signs of an ADP.

A council official walked past with four ballot papers in his hand.

"Just give it to me, mate," he said.

"Where's the Ballot Box?" I said.

"It's locked away," he replied.

"I don't believe you just said that. I find this very bizarre..." and at this point another official was walking past and appeared to recognise me and the situation that was developing. Secret ballot? Free and fair referendum with council officials walking around with Ballot Papers in their hands?

" I'll just get the Ballot Box. It's locked away behind reception." And with that he vaulted over and lifted the Box over for me to place my Ballot envelope in. It wouldn't fit, as the hole was too small! The envelope had to be folded and forced in. I expressed concern that it was locked away and that an official had been walking around with other Ballot envelopes. He did not attempt to put them in the Box, but merely stated that the people who had handed them to him were in a rush.
Good to see that the whole matter has been handled with the utmost professionalism.

I will drink a Newcastle Brown Ale in honour of the good people of the North East! Will 2 jags say sorry for wasting 41 million pounds of public money on this folly? He should resign, but then that would be the action of a man with honour!

I look foward to hearing his excuses for this humiliating defeat.

Deputy PM John Prescott says it "is too close to call" but says even a narrow win would be a "mandate for change".
Anyone with judgement this bad should not be anywhere near government.

The total number of people voting against the plans was 696,519 (78%), while 197,310 (22%) voted in favour.

Official figures showed 47.8% of the region's 1.9 million voters took part in the all-postal ballot.
A magnificent display of people power. Given this, you might think that the government would have a clear indication of how people feel. The problem is that 78% of people voted the wrong way:

A wonderfull result which puts the break on an EU inspired plan to carve us up INTO phpbb_regions. I still hope UKIP will start to look more positevely at the concept of an English Parlaiment as I feel thats the real solution to the mess casued by devoultion.
