Default Buying British cars is racist towards minorities

Political Correctness Gone Mad

According to the news report in today's (31st) "Independent " newspaper:

One police authority, when asked why it did not buy Rover cars, explained that buying "anything British, including British cars, was an overtly nationalist statement and could be considered offensive by vulnerable, deprived and ethnic minority groups in our society".

I hope that this is a wind up. I am trying to access the full article, but the Independent site is down at the moment.

I don't see any particular reason why the police force should buy from a "British" company, but nor should they rule them out. They should simply be buying the best equipment for the job and getting the best value for tax payers.

The concept of "British" companies is somewhat misleading. Most of the cars bought in this country are manufactured here anyway (as far as I am aware). Jobs are protected no matter what.

It is also illegal under EU law, I believe, to discriminate against any EU company on the basis of the country they are based in. Therefore, the police may be acting illegally by discriminating against a British company on the basis of nationality.

Quote:
Peter Beale, vice-chairman of Phoenix Venture Holdings, the owner of the loss-making company, said that MG Rover would have broken even last year if police and other public-sector organisations had followed a "buy British" policy. Last week, MG Rover reported £77m losses for 2003. Mr Beale said that losses for 2004 would be higher than last year, although the company is implementing a cost-saving programme, which should see it break even in 2005.
OK, there is the real reason for the story. The management have failed to make a profit and are looking for someone to blame.

I am also rather suspicious of the fact that the article fails to name the police authority that the comment apparently originated from. That smacks of an invented quote.

The illegality of the action could be the reason why the police authority has refused to be named or otherwise identified. However it should be easy to trace for obvious reasons. However it is no more morally bankrupt than favouring a candidate merely because of ethnic origin regardless of suitability. And on the point of legality, who can take legal action anyway? How could legal action be initiated? Like the government, authorities when they break the law, EU or national, only do so in theory as redress is not an option. I am usually very sceptical of the media but the fact that it was in the Independent, not a paper which I particularly like or agree with but grudging respect. If it was say, the Daily Mirror or Sun I would then have dismissed the story.
