Political Correctness Gone Mad
According to the news report in today's (31st) "Independent " newspaper: One police authority, when asked why it did not buy Rover cars, explained that buying "anything British, including British cars, was an overtly nationalist statement and could be considered offensive by vulnerable, deprived and ethnic minority groups in our society". |

I hope that this is a wind up. I am trying to access the full article, but the Independent site is down at the moment.
I don't see any particular reason why the police force should buy from a "British" company, but nor should they rule them out. They should simply be buying the best equipment for the job and getting the best value for tax payers. The concept of "British" companies is somewhat misleading. Most of the cars bought in this country are manufactured here anyway (as far as I am aware). Jobs are protected no matter what. It is also illegal under EU law, I believe, to discriminate against any EU company on the basis of the country they are based in. Therefore, the police may be acting illegally by discriminating against a British company on the basis of nationality. |

I am also rather suspicious of the fact that the article fails to name the police authority that the comment apparently originated from. That smacks of an invented quote. |
