Default Working with other EU states on immigration....

I think everyone agrees that working with other EU states on forming a common policy on Immigration is a good idea : Immigration is an issue whereby the econimic migrants will go to whoever is offering them the best deal - if all in Europe deal the same and agree to share out any applicants then surely that has to be a good thing for Britain?!

It really depends on the details. As with so many EU initiatives, the real goal is to remove control from the member states and pass it over to the EU. Labour is giving up our national veto on immigration policy and letting the EU install the qualified majority voting system instead. That basically means that we will no longer be able to implement our own policies, or refuse to use the EU policies, if the majority of the EU member states disagree.

Labour are maintaining that they have installed an opt-out clause instead. This is clearly a weakening of Britain's position, and all part of the slow leak of UK sovereignty to the EU.

Cooperation between countries to deal with Immigration is an excellent idea, but not one that requires EU interference.

Many people in Britain are worried that the free labour movement is creating societal problems across the country. The EU wants its citizens to be able to move across borders freely, as if the EU is one big country. Without national control, how can we ever hope to deal with that issue?

It is my view that while the idea in principle sounds ok as it often does with regards the EU many Nation States have very diffrent ideas on these issues than we have in the UK. Extension of QMV often leads to more policys we dont want. Justice and Home Affairs should always be the preserve of the Nation State, I see no justification for weakening the power of veto.

No matter what Britain does people from EU countries have a right to settle here. Today's EU immigrant is tomorrows EU 'citizen'...Britain says no ; another EU country says yes...a few years down the line citizenship granted...the person has a right to settle in Britain...EU law and hunman rights kicks in and hey presto all the family is here...all quite legal.

Britain's right to decide who settles here isn't worth the paper its written on.
