David Blunkett has hit back at critics of emergency laws that allow the detention without trial of suspected foreign terrorists. Writing in this week's Left-wing Tribune newspaper, the Home Secretary says campaigners who object to his approach should come up with their own ideas.
|
Er.. isn't it his job to come up with the ideas? The Terrorism Act is one of the most blatant breeches of British legal tradition imaginable. Strangely enough, a lot of people object to the possibility of people being arrested and held without charge for more than a couple of days.
Surely this could never happen though? Surely the Home Secretary wouldn't dream of abusing the system and holding people for long periods of time without enough evidence for conviction?

Earlier this week, there were renewed attacks on the Government's anti-terror legislation when Mr Blunkett unexpectedly ordered the release of an Algerian who had been held without charge or trial for almost three years.

Hmm. A three year prison sentence without trial or any evidence being provided at all. It is an absolute disgrace. The fact that they couldn't build a case against him in three years shows precisely why people should never be held without being charged and tried properly. I hope that he sues and takes a fortune from the government.

"Taking difficult and tough action to ensure the security and way of life of a free and democratic country is not a denial of civil and human rights, but the best way of maintaining our protection against those who would exploit our democracy in order to undermine and destroy it," he says.

I imagine that the chap imprisoned for three years without a trial might dispute David Blunkett's claim that it is not a denial of civil and human rights. How this law is even vaguely legal under the European Human Rights Act is beyond me. And how the Labour party justifies its existence at all is astounding.
It seem to me that Labour are actually completely blind to their responsibilites to protect the liberties of their citizens. They simply cannot see how short-sighted it is to remove liberties in this way.
