Default Tory eco-spies

Britain's surveillance society gathered pace today when the Conservatives (we love civil liberties) announced plans to disclose to people the amount of energy their neighbours useIt isn't yet known if neighbourhood light bulb watch committees will be formed, with the power (no pun intended) to enter homes and check whether people are using energy-efficient bulbs.
Or whether sonar equipment will be fitted to domestic soil pipes to check how often the toilet is flushed.

Gremlin, I'm thinking along the same lines, why vote for any of them, Labour or Tory - why vote your freedom away.
Britain must produce (or be planning to produce) more legislation that is aimed at restricting civil liberties than any other country in the world. Far more than the similar democracies of America, Canada and Australia, and in fact far more than the dictatorships of Russia and China.
Good luck to former Shadow home secretary Davis and his Labour MP supporters, they should launch a new political party which is dedicated to preserving civil liberties rather than destroying them.

Yes but the party would not be in power in the next election. Davis needs to be the home secretary and then start repealing stuff like ID cards for example. Without people like Davis around Cameron is liable to do stupid things. Ideally the Tory government needs a green policeman in the cabinet so everytime Cameron feels the urge to go green they can step in and avert disaster. In addition he needs my MP to stop him from saying anything europhile and Davis to make sure he does not become all law and order and start clamping down on everything as Howard did when he was home secretary. Then with all of those people Cameron can be made to consistently say sensible things. Oh and someone to remind him about taxes and socialist policies.

Why would I want to know how much energy my neighbour uses?

`Why would I want to know how much energy my neighbour uses' (Tanny D)
Tanny D, the idea is to make you feel that you're `doing your bit' for the environment.
More specifically, to make you feel that you're doing more than your neighbour is doing for the environment. The only way you can achieve this is by being aware of how much he is doing for the environment, ie. by spying on him.
You have to understand that helping to save the environment has replaced any notions of regard for the privacy of others that you might have. This characteristic, a characteristic that is one of the cornerstones of our tradition of civil liberties, is now unacceptable.
It has been eroded, mostly by the present government rather than the Tories, who in this instance at least seem only to keen to join in the Grand Civil Liberties Jumble Sale, where civil liberties are rummaged over and discarded like old clothes that are worn out and no longer fit.

So basically people are viewed as too thick to know when they are doing their bit? I don't think it's any of my business what measures my neighbour or anyone else living on my street/avenue/road are taking to lower their personalised carbon footprint outlined for them by the amazing caregin g government. Everyone has probably heard or had a leaflet concerning the matter forced upon them so really, shouldn't they already be aware of what they are required to do. Let's save the world for all the little animals and use the cute furry ones as an excuse to save our own species so that we can continue thinking up more ways to pollute and tax everyone in OBLIVION.....

Better wake up people - Labour, Tories and the "Liberals" are different shades of communism and are all intent on destroying liberties, and pushing the global warming(sorry climate change) myth and controlling every one of us us in a big brother police state.

Even the sanctity of people's homes will not survive this indecent pursuit for control.....

It might have the contrary effect .i.e those below average will start using more and then the awkward sods like me who may be above average will say stay out of my life I will do what I want.
Averages in any case are stupid, in our road of 21 houses they are 7 widows , 8 couples and 6 families of 4 and more.
