The Byron report, which recommends that the government should censor certain web sites and regulate internet providers because their content may harm children, states: `While other countries are grappling with similar problems, Gordon Brown hopes that Britain can seize the opportunity to use Dr Byron’s report – the first of its kind – to set the world standard for child digital safety.'
Well, why not. Britain already sets the world's standard for the repression of its citizens, with the government's obsession with compulsory biometric ID cards, compulsory DNA databases and the compulsory swearing of oaths of allegiance. If I were these sites, I would reply to the British government like this: `The Internet is available to people in many different societies throughout the world. In these societies, individuals are responsible for their own actions. Parents accept that they are responsible for the children, for example. Some parents even talk to their children about the Internet. Yes, they rise from their sofas, plod towards the family computer, yawn, reach for the mouse, visit a few web sites and discuss the content of these sites with their children. If they are not familiar with the Web quite often they take the trouble to become familiar with it, not for their own sakes but for their childrens' sakes. This is a practical example of the concept (which was mentioned earlier, if you remember) that is called individual responsibility and parental responsibility. In these societies, the state does not plan to replace this concept with legislation. This might be because they prefer their citizens to accept the concept of individual and parental responsibility. They might even believe that their societies will be stronger if they accept it, that it is preferable to have a society which can regulate itself rather than have a society which is regulated by the government. Naturally, this means that the government isn't as powerful as it might be. But they have the strange notion that this isn't such a bad idea, that it is actually preferable for governments to have a certain amount of power but not too much power. But I'm sure you will have considered this...' Last edited by bornfree; 29-03-2008 at 08:01 AM. Reason: missing word |

No need to sensor social networking/forums ect .All that is required is for "user name" facility to be taken away. People will not be so quick to post ,shall we say untruths when their real name is assiociated with it.
