In every other aspect though I do understand and support smokers rights to smoke in public and I know non smokers like myself are up for the chop tomorrow over something equally puerile.

Revolution anyone? I've got a pea shooter.

This is one of the things that really annoys me most in life its called Chickens fighting Chickens.
It never ceases to amaze me how work colleagues will turn on each other especially non-smokers against smokers they will spend 15 minutes gossiping about a smoker who spends 5 minutes having a fag in some vain illusion that the smoker is getting a better deal non-smokers totally disregarding their 15 minutes at the coffee machine, their gossips to other colleagues.
Put it this way you could be the most productive worker in the world that pops out for a fag now and then or you could be a lazy **** who doesn't smoke and produces half as much, who gets slagged off.

Never actually gossiped about smokers behind their backs just totted up the extra 40 minutes a day they took to smoke and gripe hypocritically about those with children leaving an hour early the previous day to take their kids to the doctors and cursing them for taking the best holiday slots. Get a grip, the workplace is full of back stabbers, bosses being the worst. Non smokers and those of us without children seemed to get the worst deal having to sit at our desks on the phone while others went off to do other things. Didn't you read the part where I said I support smokers? Even though you all stink to high heaven.

Tables have turned for me though, I didn't get mad at the system I got even and very profitable it has proved to be.

I appreciate you seeing the light and supporting smokers and i agree the work place is full of backstabbers what i don't like is people pointing out other peoples failings(usually to managers) when they don't recognise their own.

If employees spent less time worrying about what Joe blogs is getting away with they might be more content.

Some guy I was hearing from America worked in this large computer corporation. Now the staff were a right mixture, most were in jobs above their level of ability but could waffle their way through it. One guy was different, he was as close as you could get to a genius and that made him different. Often you find with computer systems there is one guy who is behind it, the one who created it, I mean even Windows was developed by one single guy who put together a team of people at Microsoft to write the original NT system.

At this company he was their man and was essential for things that worked, others would get away with it because he knew what was doing. He had a very odd life though, he didn't sleep an eight-hour day, he would work for about 4 hours, then go to sleep for 20-30 minutes and then work another 4 hours all day and all night. He would be in the company when the only others around were the cleaners, he probably did more work than anyone else in the place until one day some idiot spotted him in his car in the company carpark taking a 20 minute nap and he was subsequently fired. I expect their share price has now been affected.

Dear Denys,

Thank you for your reply.

Kalamazoo-Reynolds has a very strict non smoking policy in place which prevents us from employing smokers. As you are currently a smoker I'm afraid I will not be able to proceed any further with your application.

I would like to thank you for your interest in Kalamazoo-Reynolds and wish you every success in the future.

Kind Regards

How kind is that?
If true then an employment tribunal would rip them to shreds

Yes I know. I expect these people to be well enough educated to know that as well. Another has a video of the police beating someone up and is also wondering what to do about it.

You see this is it; once people start to disseminate knowledge then they can reclaim their power. The authorities when ambushed act illegally; i have had it happen to me personally so I know how they work. I fought back and did untold amounts of damage because I was one step ahead of them all the way. This is how people need to be and as the system dumbs the population down an unfortunate side effect is that it dumbs the workers of the system down as well. If you commence battle and are determined to win you will often find you will win one way or another. Even their laws don't make sense and I had to explain this to a crown court appeal judge as he frantically sped through his whopping great law books only to discover that they didn't! I got my cash back as a result.

I don't doubt the letters valididty, I does look genuine, I
just can't see how this has any legal basis to discriminate
in such a manner. But as you said, they must know this too..
Odd situation indeed...

Well it does. There was a case of someone who wrote job applications with entirely the same qualifications in two different identities, like I think one was black. He noticed how companies didn't give interviews to the black ones and hence he successfully managed to sue them for discrimination, without even getting as far as an interview. A company can only discriminate on things if it has a direct bearing on the job, so a job advertising a position for an actor to play a female role is not going to be affected and things like that. So the legal test would be whether smoking is something that has a direct bearing on one's ability to do the job. Now for the company to put in writing that it is breaking the law, well, that's asking for trouble.

When I first started working in IT one of the guys training me would every so often go outside for a fag break usually to clear his mind and sort out a problem he would then come back in and generally have solved the problem or at least clarified his thoughts enough to write it up and then carry on

I know. I'm just the same except I don't have to go outside for a fag. With computers that one vital thought could save months of work or even save the entire project in some cases.

I tend to plan nearly everything in my head, I will have a fag and a cup of tea for about 20 minutes, figure the entire next section out and then get to the keyboard and just type it all in for about the next hour. I suppose many people in companies have to look like they are working and stare endlessly at the computer, but I find that a distraction. It's like the program is in my head and you can figure it out much faster if you can commit the entire structure of what you are working on in your mind.
