Welcome to the Deutsche Bank CHANGEit Awards Teachers Pack for campaigning in the classroom.

The purpose of this pack is to provide you with three easy to implement lesson plans (with references) to help you include the valuable skills and knowledge campaigning develops during your citizenship lessons.

Each lesson has been developed by a teacher for teachers and has been designed to fit in with the key stage 3 curriculum requirements for citizenship. (See individual plans for specific points of the curriculum covered.) The clear links between citizenship and PSHE, such as development of personal skills and provision of opportunities to promote communication skills, mean that this pack will also be useful to those following PSHE structures.

The pack has been put together by Common Purpose and Deutsche Bank as part of their national awards scheme for young campaigners - The Deutsche Bank CHANGEit Awards.

    Common Purpose
Common Purpose runs educational programmes for leaders of all ages, backgrounds and sectors… in order to provide them with the inspiration, information and opportunities they need to change the world. Common Purpose's YourTurn campaign focuses on young people and the Deutsche Bank CHANGEit Awards build on this.

    Deutsche Bank Citizenship UK
Deutsche Bank Citizenship UK manages the Bank’s employees volunteering programmes, charitable giving and community partnerships. The Bank is committed to finding new and innovative ways to build stronger, more prosperous communities and help individuals unlock their potential. Achieving these objectives involves over 1,200 employee volunteers and donations in excess of £3 million each year in the areas of education, community development and art.
    The Deutsche Bank CHANGEit Awards
In its fifth year, the Awards have recognised the achievements of over 6,000 young people from across the UK. Developed for 11 – 18 year olds who are trying to effect positive change in their school, club or community, the scheme offers Certificates of Recognition to every young person who enters and there are many prizes on offer to reward and celebrate the achievements of young campaigners. Further information about the scheme (including entry details) is available on page 14 of this pack.

Well I just read an article about the NHS writing to Common Purpose because they where using Tobacco company funding to host courses which NHS staff members where attending.
Not illegal but I can see why the NHS might be miffed.

I was digging a bit into its intellectual roots as claimed to be a product of the Frankfurt School by Brian Gerrish. Well here is something I was not aware of, according to this it is something that sprung from the Fabian Society. Some of this info I have come across before but here is a little snippet. Take it, as you will.

Theodor Adorno was a leading professor of the Frankfurt School of Social Research in Germany, founded by the British Fabian Society. A collaborator of twelve-tone formalist and British intelligence operative Arnold Schoenberg, Adorno was brought to the United States in 1939 to head the Princeton Radio Research Project. The aim of this project, as stated in Adorno's Introduction to the Sociology of Music, was to program a mass "musical" culture that would steadily degrade its consumers. Punk rock is, in the most direct sense, the ultimate result of Adorno's work.
Now maybe if you accept the premise that art can be used for brainwashing, as in say the Chinese 'cultural' revolution you can make sense of why councils promote it so much. So many grants available to the arts but a lot of 'art' is not what you were brought up to think it was. Frankfurt school = (vulgarism = art).

Some quotes from Bertrand Russell to give you an idea how they think.

"the subject which will be of most importance politically is mass psychology.... Its importance has been enormously increased by the growth of modern methods of propaganda. Of these the most influential is what is called 'education.' Religion plays a part, though a diminishing one; the press, the cinema, and the radio play an increasing part.... It may be hoped that in time anybody will be able to persuade anybody of anything if he can catch the patient young and is provided by the State with money and equipment."

"The subject will make great strides when it is taken up by scientists under a scientific dictatorship.... The social psychologists of the future will have a number of classes of school children on whom they will try different methods of producing an unshakable conviction that snow is black. Various results will soon be arrived at. First, that the influence of home is obstructive. Second, that not much can be done unless indoctrination begins before the age of ten. Third, that verses set to music and repeatedly intoned are very effective. Fourth, that the opinion that snow is white must be held to show a morbid taste for eccentricity. But I anticipate. It is for future scientists to make these maxims precise and discover exactly how much it costs per head to make children believe that snow is black, and how much less it would cost to make them believe it is dark gray."

"Although this science will be diligently studied, it will be rigidly confined to the governing class. The populace will not be allowed to know how its convictions were generated. When the technique has been perfected, every government that has been in charge of education for a generation will be able to control its subjects securely without the need of armies or policemen."

Yes, history is a wonderful thing. If it fits like a glove into the general scheme of things then chances are it didn't just all happen by accident.

If you look into the IPPR and look at Russell's ideas then it is pretty much just that. It's mainly coming from the sociology departments of our universities. I have looked at some of their spiel and they seem to have their own language to keep onlookers out of it.

Have you found out why unsuitable people are described as 'too Ipswich' yet?
