Rather than just put up some links to some news stories I thought it might be a better idea to create some news instead. I have an idea for a Monmouth Rebellion part 2 but I need a bit of help. Does anyone work for a council and/or know about legal issues to do with what would happen or what the government could do if a council decided not to enforce the smoking ban? My point is that instead of having a war with the council and especially when your council is not Labour it would be far better to help your council to help the people, but we need some legal brains on the case. If we can figure it out for the council then any Tory run council could see a windfall of support. Also what do Liberals have to say on the matter, are they being Liberal or liberal about it? (I have about equal number of both to convince) All inside information would be most welcome. Thanks.

Remember guys, it is nice and hot on England at the moment, almost a continental feel to it as one sips one's beer in the pub garden and smokes a ciggy talking about our fascist government. What will they be saying in 6 months time in ice and snow, blizzards and general pestilence?
Our council are being very sheepish about those new fines. The question is whether the conditioning of all those red signs on every shop is going to turn then into good little communists or whether they see red. I think our council might have the same sympathies as the rest of us down here. Is it the same where you are or is it compliance? |

Perhaps you're missing the point that for every sad smoker who is happy to continue dragging up stinking carcinogenic smoke from the pits of their lungs and drenching bystanders minding their own business trying to enjoy a pint with the resulting clouds of smelly effluence.
Said councils will be criticised and lose the support of many more voters who object to smoking other peoples fags involuntarily. If there's one thing that was apparent during the Welsh Assembly election campaign it was that the only adverse reaction that I witnessed on a continual basis was the ...."I was thinking of voting for UKIP but not now that I've spotted your smoking policy." .... This happened over and over again in response to the ludicrous decision to highlight opposition to the smoking ban over areas such as health, immigration and even crime, and this reaction was was echoed to me by those campaigning in other areas. It's all really quite simple.......I don't urinate over the person next to me in the pub toilets.....don't blow your smelly smoke all over me when I'm in the bar. |

This is a simplistic argument - as it happens more people want a smoke-free environment but the market would have accommodated that with a proporation of smoke-free pubs being available without the EU government getting involved.
To see the effect of EU government intervention go to any businesses for sale website and see the number of pubs on the market. |

My apologies I was rushing off to play ice hockey and not paying attention to my own post.
To clarify for the pedantic...for every sad smoker there's a couple of voters who welcome not having to involuntarily breathe in their smoke. Ranter..since the introduction of the ban in Wales I frequent the same pubs that I always did and of course speak to the same people in the same numbers that I did before in these pubs, with two major differences. 1) I'm not stinking of other peoples stale smoke whilst conversing with them. 2) I have to walk through the little pile of discarded dog ends on the floor of the entrance of these pubs now because of the number of ignorant pigs who throw them on the floor outside the pub now rather than inside as before despite the receptacles provided. |

Tell that to my local landlord who's pub is half empty now, where are all these fascist non-smokers who promised to use the pubs more frequently once smoking was banned. |

How about the EU element of this. Is there any any evidence of this ban being prompted by the EU, Is there anything in law that states have to push through legislation. Is there a smoking gun?
The way so many countries have pushed this through at the same time suggests it is. I know there was a reference in the Constitution, not sure if it is retained in the Treaty, and I know they are budgeting £9.6 million for anti smoking in the next budget. I agree with some of the comments about inconsiderate smokers, and also that there should have been a partial ban(allowing smoking and non smoking rooms in Pubs and workplaces) with a presumption in favour of non smoking. I say this as quite a heavy smoker myself. |
