Hitler and his Gestapo had more use for these!
![]() I think some of these inventors have been watching to many movies from the seventies. ![]() I know a good idea how about Politicians, Police, Doctors trial them! ![]() We could put there details on google earth and be able to find one when we needed them. ![]() |

If the government did implement these, they would spend billions on it, ruining individual liberties in the process. Billions for what could, like any other micro-chip, probably be destroyed by placing the part of the body with the micro-chip in it inside a microwave oven for about a second. Which would be billions of pounds wasted.

I'm sure some enterprising soul is already developing a portable microwave device for just that purpose.
Back in the early days of microwave technology, engineers discovered that microwave signal towers, used in telecommunications, could warm your lunchtime pasty nicely if you left it in the space directly underneath the tower. Anybody done any experiments about the effects on RFID cards when they're placed next to a mobile phone mast? |

Simply, you hold the catch so the microwave thinks the door is closed and so will switch on. But be careful - microwaves are very dangerous, so I wouldn't do that for over 1 or 2 seconds.
That is where my ID card will be going (if I ever decide to get one - or have one forced upon me), although I won't need to hold the thing open then. |

Brilliant... Roasted shoulder of Tara with garlic and rosemary, mmm I could eat myself.
Which brings me onto the subject of my new RFID passport Any ideas on how to blast the chip to smithereens whilst still being able to use it? This is a delicate issue as applying for a new one isn't an option because this month the Home Office are starting to interview new applicants demanding to know everyones bathroom habits, I would hate to be informed by an airport official I cannot travel as my RFID chip is void. |

The microwave will balls it over. Although, I wouldn't recommend it, the RFID tag in the passports has an enormous copper antenna (The piece of wire coiled around the page) and contains other small metallic components. You can actually put them "to sleep" but they can be easily reactivated, such as whenever you walk by something resonating within a certain band of frequency. A better way would be to tightly coil lots and lots of wire around a piece of soft iron (you might have to paint the wire with a ceramic paint first, to stop the iron conducting), pass a current through the wire. You will likely needs lots of power and a transformer to get the potential difference (voltage) right. Put the passport near the coil and pass the charge through the wire for short period. This is also known as an electro magnetic coil. Or, an EMP charge! It will overload the chip with electro magnetic energy and blow the capacitor. If you are lucky, depending on the capacitor used, you might see a bit of goo around the chip when done! Though I still think this will stop you flying.
