Default Police forces 'no longer working'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4253138.stm

Quote:
Sweeping changes to the make-up of police forces in England and Wales have been recommended in an official report.
The existing structure of 43 forces is "no longer fit for purpose", the Inspectorate of Constabulary said.

Some smaller forces should be merged so they meet the needs of 21st Century policing and provide the standard of protective service necessary, it said.
Another haulmark of the Nazification of Britain. Merger of police forces INTO phpbb_one big centralised block.

Quote:
Former Home Secretary David Blunkett proposed the creation of larger "strategic" forces big enough to deal with the demands of modern policing.
What a surprise. You can see the same people driving this initiative as are doing ID cards.

Quote:
But Rick Naylor, president of the Police Superintendents' Association, said reducing the number again to about 30 would not be going far enough.

"We want to see a single national police force, with existing basic command units providing local policing," he said.

"The question is whether the government have the political bottle to go down this radical road."

With 30 forces, there would still be some without "the resilience to deal with all the facets of modern policing", he added.
Notice that the justification is pure meaningless waffle. There is nothing to stop forces working together, but bundling them together under one central control is a recipe for remote, out of touch control.

Quote:
Shadow environment secretary Oliver Letwin, whose local Dorset force looks a likely candidate for a merger with neighbouring Wiltshire or Hampshire, told BBC News the proposals were "undiluted rubbish".

"The main problem about policing in Dorset, and I suspect it's very similar in most other rural counties in England... is the people feel the police are remote."
Well said. Shame UKIP are missing with any comment (as usual).

Quote:
But he warned: "Any changes must be made for reasons of effectiveness, not financial efficiency."

He said police needed local knowledge to deal with the low-level crime affecting people's lives.
Absolutely. Things are bad enough here in Dorset, without joining with any other force. Local police stations are closed at 5pm Monday to Friday, and if you have to contact the police, your call is sent to a remote call centre about 30 miles away.

We had a spate of vandolism in the village and the glass in our greenhouse kept being broken so we were visited by the police. It was a young policewoman who came to the house, the male officer staying in the car. We were given a crime number, and asked if we would like to receive counselling. Counselling, for few broken panes of glass!!! We went on to receive not 1, not 2 but 3 copies of a pamphlet designed to help us come to terms with the crime.

This is all in the name of regionalisation. The same thing is happening to the fire services.

UKIP needs to say something, and quickly, or yet another open goal is going to be missed.

Has anyone ever explained what 'modern policing' is? This new phenomenom which requires policing to 'radically' change?

Modern policing means letting technology help catch the criminals AFTER the crime has been committed - reactive policing as opposed to proactive policing.

However, it should be realised that an awful lot of what Blairs britain is about is based on the principle of reaction rather than proaction - the thinking is along the lines of: "what is the most populist thing we can do in reaction to...." Why - because it is easier to react than to drive from the front, and it is MUCH easier to gain popular support by giving appropriate actions after an event - very few people wonder WHY an event happened, and much depends on good spin to blind them as to the true reasons for why the event happened in the first place.

Another strand of this is the fixation on 'targets' - set a target, and take action depending on the result - reactive rather than proactive again you see.

Look closely, you'll see it time and time again. I think this is a vulnerability for nulab if exploited skillfully enough.

I had reason today to be filling in a witness form for the police and during a bit of chit chat I got the impression that these plans are not welcome by the ordinary policeman and woman.

Why would they want to work for a huge possibly inefficient less democratic organisation such as the new super-sized constabulary of New Labour?
