It is not that the people are morons, it is that they simply don't care and they are afraid. Politics doesn't interest the majority of people, and they don't understand the consequences of "giving up their civil liverties". They just want to feel safe and feel that something is being done about the terrorists.
Remember that 80% supported ID cards when it was suggested that they would combat terrorism. If the British people are feeling that they are willing to give up their freedoms, then it is us who are failing in our role. Politicians are there to convince the people one way or another. If all they hear is a constant message that they need to give up freedoms.... what else are we expecting them to think? Perhaps if UKIP made some effort rather than remaining silent on the single biggest issue facing this country today, there might be some proper opposition to rally the people. |

Excellent post Anthony Butcher. People just want politicians they trust to act in their best interests. They don't all want to be politically active themselves. Politicians are failing them (have they ever not?)
It might be a little more constructive to stop blaming the people and think of ways of getting the alternative point across. Danish Ind, I would have thought any law made can be unmade, it is my biggest hope! It just keeps getting a bigger job to unravel the mess as the days roll by. |

You just have to tell lies and get away with it to begin with.
It doesn't matter when you are actually in power so much. Not something I want to do, so please can someone come up with plan B.

There is very strong evidence that only about 2.5% of people can actually think for themselves. The rest of the population need to see someone that they respect (e.g. a football player, rock band, parent, friend, etc) to say that an idea is good before they will actually believe it. You can persuade people to believe absolutely anything…that drugs are cool, that diversity is our strength, that the EU is great, that there was a link between the 9/11 terror attacks and Saddam (over 65% of Americans believe this), that the American government invented AIDS to reduce the black population (over 20% of black Americans believe this), etc. |

If plan A is politicians telling lies to the public to get what you want, then plan B is telling the truth. (Though personally I would not refer to it in this way. Plan A is telling the truth; there is no plan B)
Of course politics is not black and white and every issue can be argued from a different perspective. The art of politics is getting your point across. Politics is not lying, however. That is, well, lying. Deliberately concealing facts in order to make an argument more convincing is still lying. The problem is that lying is so ingrained in all aspects of politics that many people believe that it is acceptable! Every now and again a politician still manages to take a step too far and the public is 'outraged', but it happens all too infrequently. Nevertheless, holding to the truth is essential if the country, and the world, is to progress at all through the 21st century. |
