Default Labour consider banning BNP

By Bob Roberts Deputy Political Editor
THE BNP could be banned under new anti-terror laws, it was revealed yesterday.

Home Office Minister Hazel Blears said the Government wanted to outlaw all extremist groups spreading "messages of hate".

Leading Muslims have called for the British National Party - blamed for sparking race riots across the country - to be included in the crackdown, along with radical Islamic organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir.

Asked directly if she would ban the BNP, she said: "What we are saying is where people are peddling messages of hate, glorifying terrorism in this way, that is the action we want to take.

"We set out what is unacceptable behaviour.

"Where people are indulging in this kind of behaviour, clearly we are going to take action."

Under the new legislation, unacceptable behaviour would include anything which "fosters hatred which may lead to intra-community violence in the UK".

Muslim representatives have said there must be a ban on ultra-Right groups to show Islamic groups were not being discriminated against.

Mohammed Shafiq, of the Ramadhan Foundation, told a conference: "If anybody is inciting hatred then that is wrong and action needs to be taken.

"I suggest we make a request to Tony Blair that the BNP and the National Front are also banned."

Labour MP for Tooting, London, Sadiq Khan told the Mirror the Government had backing in the Muslim community.

He said: "I do hold with banning the BNP or Hizb ut-Tahrir because I think we can take on these people and defeat them.

"But there is a perception in the community that Muslim groups are being picked on."

Mr Khan, a former human rights lawyer, said there were also fears mosques could be shutdown. He said: "Nobody should be in our community and our society preaching hate. But to link a mosque and those people who may innocently go along to listen to a sermon is a distant link to make."

Consider the can of worms opened.

Specific incitment of murder or violence is one thing.

Hatred though, that is wooly to say the least.

Halal slaughter inspires me to "hate" those who partake of its products. So are they going to ban that then?

The BNP may be banned but would it mean that all the members of the BNP will simply disappear never to be seen again, Or will they form another group, another party?

I know many who (at present) will not join BNP due to past baggage but would gleefully jump on board something similar, but less tainted.

I see it everyday on this forum.

From every NuLab cloud raining on the BNP - there is a silver lining.
