Default ID cards 'wouldn't stop attacks'

Quote:
Identity cards would not have stopped the London bombings which claimed the lives of 37 people and injured many more, Charles Clarke has said.

But on balance, the home secretary says, he believes ID cards would help rather than hinder the ability to deal with particular terrorist threats.

He also suggested that in future civil liberties may have to be curtailed.

Convenient, don't you think. I especially like the fact that these statements are not backed up by one shred of supporting evidence.

I fully expect politicians to capitalise on events like this, but it would be nice if they waited a few decent days first.

Masterful bit of dodging there.

But what's all this about civil liberties being curtailed?

Not being specific is he, leave it open to dump the ones they don't like later rather than be bound by their words now.

Just think. ID cards are in! It's compulsory to have one at all times. The powers that be what to find terrorists.

Question 1. Do police stop all dodgy looking "foreigners" and risk being accused of harrassment?

Question2. What if some who are stopped say they have lost their card? Does the police officer haul them off to the station or give them time to bring it in?

Either way it's not good for the police! Anyone saying they forgot their card could be someone who never had one because they just "arrived" and then they would just vanish if they were given time to present it! Anyone who is a "homegrown terrorist" and has an ID card would not be so silly as to put "I'm a professional terrorist, grade 1 with honours" on the registration form!

Come on Clarke! Have some sense or resign! And how come your intelligence guys knew nothing? Good grief! And after the mistakes of Iraq they still get praised, promoted, and paid well!

Who pays for the tourist's ID card? How is a day-tripping terrorist stopped?
This will entail border checks and a huge department to enforce it competently ........so why is it not introduced now?

Good point! This whole thing has more loopholes and vague interpretations by the moment! Blair doesn't have a clue!

Listening to Bliar on the radio yesterday was embarrassing. He was stuttering and flapping as he clearly has no real argument for ID cards. He admits they wouldn't have stopped the attacks, he declares we mustn't change our way of life because of terrorism.

Yet he still pushes this ID card scam as something that needs to happen.

Poke it Blair, I'm not having one!

Tourists won't need ID cards. No one in the country for less than 3 months will have to have one. Of course, how police on the ground are supposed to tell whether someone has been in the country for longer than three months isn't been explained. Or will they have to force all people not carrying ID cards to report to a police station within seven days? Of course, any terrorists carrying bombs will have detonated them by then.

This ID card fiasco is just an extension of governmental control. The linking of the cards to various bogeys (terrorism, asylum, health tourism, etc) is just more spin-doctoring. What is most depressing is the apparent willingness of the British public to accept ID cards, and to accept the reasons given by the glib politicos for their introduction. When one is confronted with polls saying 75% of people back ID cards, one wonders whether Britain is saveable, and quite frankly, whether it is actually worth saving.
