Default We should force people to the polls, says Hoon

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...679919,00.html

Quote:
COMPULSORY voting at general elections should be introduced as a way of breathing new life INTO phpbb_the political process, Geoff Hoon will say today.

The Leader of the Commons is the first serving member of the Cabinet to endorse publicly such a radical change in Britain’s democracy.

In a speech to the left-wing Institute for Public Policy Research think-tank in London, Mr Hoon will say that the measure is necessary to counter the low level of voter turnout.
Another insight INTO phpbb_the mind of New Labour. If the people start turning away from a political system, because they don't trust it, then force them to vote.

What part of free country does that come under? If they force me to vote, it will be the first time ever that I won't vote.

Just because the Aussies use it, doesn't mean it works or is fair.

Again it is saying the state can tell me what to do. If I don't want to vote, that is my choice and a free born Englishman.

It is just trying to legitimise a failing system instead of asking the questions why people no longer bother with the process.

calm down mkpdavies

i have family over in Australia and they dont mind its just something that they do every few years no biggy they dont see being required to vote as doing away with any freedoms

however Australia has a fairer system for government rather than our FPTP system

Like the broken record i can be on this subject. If the voting system was changed, teanagers given more information about politics and what it covers and other changes there would be no need to even discuss the possibility of compulsary voting

You really should feel ashamed to call yourself Liberal anything. You are anything but!

I am calm, but I can see the state becoming way to powerful, even if you can't. I couldn't give a toss what your family mind doing! I mind being told what to do by the state. That is all that matters to a free man. Me not voting causes no harm to anyone else, thus I should be free to choose that option.

We already have a none of the above option and it's one people are choosing in greater numbers, even with bent postal votes being thrown at them.

Which is why the Forces called him TCH...

Doh! No Brainer! Is the reason why people are not voting because there is no difference between the three old gang parties??

Scotgirl has a point; first past the post only works for a two party or no party system.

The whole system is corrupt from top to bottom, I will not vote if it becomes compulsary, I will not have an ID card and I will not stop criticising Islam. So Jail for me on three counts then...

I've got no problems with changing the system. Changing the system to one that forces people to legitimise it, I'll never agree with. It might work for Saddam, communists, other dictators and some countries like Australia might think it's great. It's not what this country is about though.

Should go for PR before compulsory. I wonder Scotgirl if there is evidence of more people voting PR in the Scottish Parliament elections compared to the FPTP Westminster General elections :?:

I don't think it should even start to be considered, you do. Unless you meant not force people to vote at all by "a lot of changes".
