it is higher (not greatly but higher) i can look up the details if your really interested

however i know a few people who refuse to vote in the Scottish Elections from both sides of the spectrum

people who will only vote if its given more powers

and

people who wont vote as they didnt want the scottish parliment in the first place

again like the no apathy site i dont agree with not voting it all comes accross as excuses to me (personal opinion) but you cant please everyone

If it's not too much bother, details would be good. It will be very interesting in 2007 to find out if more people vote in the Scottish Council elections with the PR system being introduced. Direct comparisons can be made.

Anyone got any idea how they're going to keep track of who voted and who didn't? How do they do it in Oz?

Be reasonable John. It's one of the only policies they have which makes sense to a large number of people. Can you blame them for pushing it at every opportunity?

everyone should be forced to VOTE and I volunteer to march them to the polling stations and make them vote.

I agree with Scotgirl

Whilst I am all for our freedoms or at least the few we have left, I do feel voting should be compulsory. And I'll say why -

It would irk people to start with, but it would soon become just something we do automatically.

It would encourage people to take an interests in politics. Of course there are always exceptions to every rule. But more people actually listening to what the politicians have to say, is a good thing.

Millions of pounds is wasted in ridiculous advertising and think-tanks, in order to find a way to increase voter turn out. Money wasted. Money saved with compulsory voting, which would cost less as the next generation grew up and voted without question and didn't have to be forced to go. In future, they would wonder what all the fuss was about.

If everyone voted, the political parties would have to have a wider range of policies. Not ones shaped to tempt the "usual bunch." This in itself has to be a very good thing.

The minority parties would find that they get more notice from voters who currently do not vote, because they do not want Labour, Conservatives or Liberals. They are more likely to vote for such as UKIP and not see their vote as "what's the point, it's a wasted vote."

If voters are allowed to spoil their voting papers, they are not being forced to vote for anyone at all, are they? They can still protest if they want to.
------------------------

On the minus side - Labour are only considering it, because Labour voters are the laziest voters. It's official. They know it.

You want to force people to do things, because you think it is right.

Is that EDP policy? If so I can mark it down as another authortarian party.
