Default Id Cards Plans in Turmoil Ahead of Crucial Vote

http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=4742992

Quote:
The Government’s controversial plans for ID cards are in turmoil ahead of next week’s crucial Commons vote on the issue, according to Shadow Home Secretary David Davis.

He said the cards were “unnecessary, unworkable and unlikely to make our streets and communities any safer”.

That's more like it!

Quote:
In an article for The Mail on Sunday, Mr Davis said: “In Labour’s Britain there is a sense that we are all now guilty until proven innocent.

“As if to reinforce this point, they now want us to carry around a plastic card with our name, address and photo on it so we can prove who we are all at all times.

“This is something which I instinctively oppose. It represents a unhealthy shift in the balance of the relationship between the citizen and the state.”

This is the kind of talk I have been waiting for. They have found their balls on this issue at last.

Several of Britain's biggest trade unions appear set to jeopardize Prime Minister Tony Blair's first test of authority following last month's general election by opposing his plans to introduce controversial identity cards.

Eight unions, including the Transport and General (T&G), one of Labour's biggest donors, were reported Saturday to be urging backbench MPs to vote against the scheme during Tuesday's crucial parliamentary debate.

The T&G has warned the entire parliamentary Labour party that ID cards risked "becoming Labour's poll tax" which contributed to bring down the previous Conservative government, and could be "a disaster for race relations," the Financial Times reported Saturday.
Peachy. Tories and Unions uniting with almost everyone else. Labour must realise the momentum that is building here!

Personal details of all 44 million adults living in Britain could be sold to private companies as part of government attempts to arrest spiralling costs for the new national identity card scheme, set to get the go-ahead this week.

The Independent on Sunday can today reveal that ministers have opened talks with private firms to pass on personal details of UK citizens for an initial cost of £750 each.
Sneeky. The government will sell your details to help pay for the damned things. They look like they will stoop to anything to get this through. They realise that some people only complain about the cost, so they look for ways around this.

Disgusting.

Scots will not need identity cards to use public services. The Executive has confirmed the controversial scheme will operate differently north of the border. In England, ID cards could be required to access key services such as health care.
Another case of England getting a raw deal.
