Too many guys on here. Turns 'em ya see, all politics and no sex makes Joe Politico a homosexual fiend!

(NOT a homophobic statement I hasten to add, we welcome members of the GLBT community.) (perhaps too much).

Default Congestion charging

Some really bad civil liberties implications....

There was a report this last week that congestion charging is to be introduced in other areas, aside from London. One way in which this might be collected is through some sort of identification chip / transmitter installed in your car, and tracked by GPS satellites.

A consequence of this would be that the police/state would be able to track the movements of everybody with a car. The locations could be stored in a computer, ultimately the purposes for the journeys analysed.

Similarly with mobile phones. The mobile phone network has to track where the person is so that it can know which transmitter mast to route the call through. I understand that identification pulses are transmitted every so often to keep this updated, and the phones respond to this with identification codes.

By accurately timing the delay between the response signal hitting each of the three aerials on the mast (rather like radar) the precise location of the mobile phone can be measured.

You can imagine that Schengen the securocrats or some other agency, wishing to keep track of certain individuals could easily hack INTO phpbb_the mobile phone company's location database, and track you.

Regarding the description 'criminal'. This needs to be used only sparingly, to describe people who really are criminals, eg thieves, murderers. If it becomes watered down, trivialised or spread (eg applied to noisy neighbours, or people dropping litter or chewing gum) then it becomes devalued, meaningless.

I can guarantee that if someone was to be framed for a murder or a crime they had not committed the evidence which they thought would have been collated would then be found to have been "lost".

I can also imagine another scenario. Someone thinks that the data tracking system can exonerate them, the law authorities deem it unsubstantiated because someone could have "borrowed" your car or vehicle or ID card.

In effect the technology which could prove your innocence would be overlooked while the same technology could fine you for being in the wrong area without paying.

We are sleepwalking INTO phpbb_a tyranny which could parallel or exceed the USSR.
