I think honesty should be the prime requirement of everyone as should wherever possible a second chance to atone for a previous wrongdoing. It is a matter between Employer and Employee as regards employing someone with a criminal conviction it is on the shoulders of the employee if they get it wrong, and it is the responsbility of the employee to be upfront and honest about past mistakes.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Gen 1:1
We should indeed and we should be prepared to back those who employ the police, if they make an error then they may came a time when it is mandatory for all applicants to the police to have a clean record, for me it depends on individual circumstances.
By the way I am a civil servant and do have a criminal record so am a public servant, I declared it openly when first applying so have gone through the difficulties of applying for jobs and admitting past mistakes, my conviction has no bearing on the job I do and how I do it, nobody is at risk from me that is the judgement that was taken by my employer. People can change, I fully admitt where I to repeat said offence or any other than I would have brought my empolyer into disrepute and would deserve instant dismissal.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
