It's just got to go. There are many reasons for this:
1) Youth Parliament costs £1million, 300k of which comes from taxpayers money. The rest is made up charities who could instead be putting the money to a good cause and some of these charities are anti-knife crime charities which recieve governmental funding. All this money and there is no benefits to it.
2) It means results in career politicians- people who become MP's because of the lifestyle and money. Not because they have experienced things that they want to change and make better.
3) Why should charity and taxpayers money just be put towards these kids who give nothing to their communities in return whilst taking from the community to fund their own holidays
http://austinactive.yolasite.com/blog.phpTonight, Keenan Alexander MYP for Glasgow North East and I attended the Smithycroft Christmas Show. We held a raffle in order to raise money for our Glasgow MSYPs Malawi trip. We managed to raise over £300 !! We also auctioned a bottle of malt whisky which raised £65.
I'm sorry Austin but you claim that you commit 10-15 hours a week into helping your community. When you listed those hours, 90% of it was meetings and the rest was attending shows and other leisurable activities. You attend those shows in order to finance a holiday for yourselves in MALAWI!!!! I understand that Glasgow isn't exactly rich so the money taken from you here could be invested into supporting your community. However, you'd rather that money go into an expensive holiday for your greedy selves instead. Personally, I find that detrimental rather than helpful.
4) Just watch some clips from UKYP sessions in Westminster. It is rediculous. If you haven't seen it is basically a load of snobby children pretending they are adults. What I want to know is why is £1,000,000 being spent on this kids-club. I would have no problems if it was the parents of the children who attend but it it's not, it is charity donations and taxpayers money.
5) It is good that youth are getting involved in politics, however, there are much less detrimental ways to do that. Spending one-million pound on a kids club which is abused in order to get free trips to Malawi is outrageous. If a youth is has an interest in policits, good on him. However, they should finance their society themselves if they wish for one, not the taxpayer's money.
