A uniquely Scottish documentary that brings together Oscar, Turner prize and Bafta winners to look at Scotland through the prism of human rights.

Marking the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, filmmakers and artists such as Tilda Swinton, Irvine Welsh and Douglas Gordon each tackle a 'new commandment'.

Exploring such issues as torture, slavery, or the freedoms of thought and assembly, the resulting film is a powerful, passionate and surprisingly humorous artistic collaboration that gives intimate meaning to human rights in Scotland.
The world premiere of The New Ten Commandments was this year at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Those standing up for human rights in Scotland appearing in the different chapters of the programme include -
  • Peter Dow's republican protest against the Queen at Holyrood
  • Aamer Anwar, lawyer, defending a contempt of court charge
  • Jim Swire, campaigning on Lockerbie Pan Am flight 103 bombing
  • Anti-slavery-sex-trafficking, Suicides-concerned and Asylum-seekers campaigners
Also featuring
  • Kenny Richey liberated from death-row. Scotland's 20 years he missed
  • Enhanced interrogation techniques - the sheep's perspective
  • A narrated comic about a man who liked to ride his bike in private
  • Thespian musings
Follow the count-down to the TV broadcast of The New Ten Commandments on Scottish Republican News.

Thanks.

I am only going to be on TV for 10 minutes so I reckon I still need another 5 minutes of fame to reach the Andy Warhol benchmark of 15 minutes of fame.

However I am 48 years old and when compared to teenage pop stars and the like who get way more than 15 minutes of fame, I am a slow-starter in the fame business.

Nevertheless, if all I was to get in life was 15 minutes of fame, I think 10 minutes speaking out for a Scottish republic and human rights is an excellent use of my due allocation of fame.

Oh well, maybe you will get to use the other 5 minutes to sing a trashy pop song and become really famous.

Absolutely, well said that man.

I would never exchange my human rights or right to speak, no matter how much money or stardom was bestowed on me.
Without the former the latter is useless (and I wouldn't want to be famous either really).

What chance do young people have today with such media influence and the promoted worshipping of money and celebrities ?

I'll be watching ! (hope I've got the channel.....)

Peter Dow, its a shame (perhaps) your initial ten minutes of fame do not extend to a wider audience. But maybe I will get to see it later on.... via alternative means

I believe we all get our 15 mins of fame - but this might come at any time in our lives - so make the most of it when it comes!!!!

I'm not sure if a republican protest against the queen is my cup of tea, and also whether it falls under 'human rights' or is a freedom of speech to put across ones views - maybe the two are the same these days! We do hear so much "that's my human right ...... (to do whatever)", its a catch-all it seems.
Just wondering, does the Scottish dimension play a part in the republican protest or is that irrelevant to the argument in this case?

In what manner are the new commandments being given? Commandments suggest a certain forcefulness to agree.

sweetcaroline,

Do you know the Queen has just shut down the Canadian parliament ?
I've posted a thread in the "International politics" section.

I suggest you read it - I think you'll find it quite interesting.
