Default Bl00dy Stupid New Law

Anyone know anything bout this new law, that the beeb reported was passed a few weeks ago? I'm talking bout the one whereby it is now illegal to call a barmaid/shopworker names such as love, hun, or sweetheart etc.
If this is so, how can it be policed? Does it also mean I cant call the people I work with on building sites things like mate, pal or buddy? And most importantly, is this part of yet another EU directive?
Thanks in advance,

Never heard of it. I also find it hard to believe that any government would legislate against such a thing.

Yeah, it was directed at business owners. If you call a barmaid "love" the landlord will end up in court if she complains. Likewise if you swear or tell rude jokes in front of her. So, it's up to the business owner to police it.

Not really a new law, IIRC - just a tightening up on the existing ones. Equality and workplace harassment and all that ****.

Wake up guys, this is all part of the tightening up of our freedom on everything we call normal, its a big part of the Communist styled European Unions strategy on discipline.

The only term of friendship or endearment that will be allowed will be to call each other "KOMERAD".

Pass it on and spread the word, freedom is dwindling away at a rapid rate now because the CEU is unafraid of us all.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I agree, it is moronic, but I do feel it is important.
And if it is from the EU, I feel they have shot themselves in the foot, because sometimes petty rules make people realise exactly how much control they want over our lives. If we're picking a fight with them, use any and every weapon available.

It’s much more about the opportunity for an employee to claim that he or she has been subjected to sexual harassment under the British sex equality legislation than anything else.

Under that and other legislation the responsibility lies with the employer to protect the “victim”, and so it would be the pub landlord who would get it in the neck if the barmaid objected to being referred to in a way that the courts decided that the “victim” FOUND to be sexually offensive.

In English Law, there used to be a well known principle of 'ignorantia haut excusat' which, in essence meant, a defendant could not rely upon not knowing the law as a valid defence.

Within the context of the widespread debates and comments on the new 'EU Constitution' or 'EU Treaty' (or whatever it is supposed to be called - see what I mean?), conflicting opinions have often been expressed about what particular provisions mean. We seem to be rapidly reaching a situation in which almost every legal requirement will need to be tested in court for a meaning or meanings to be determined. Lawyers will grow increasingly wealthy and, if they and the Bench do not 'know' the law short of formal determination per the courts, they'll be hard put to maintain the above 'excusat' principle!

Yes, we should all be able to troop into court and claim: "Yep, we didn't know that was unlawful luv . . . oops sorry, Gov!"

I agree.

The argument that ignorance of the law was no defence, was fine while the law was simple, limited and uncomplicated.

I don't think law is any of those things. It is a bloody minefield out there now! People will be scared to fart, incase it infringes some emissions law one day.
