At least one of the Lib Dem front benchers who resigned and voted against the treaty did so out of principle. Alistair Carmichael represent the rock solid Lib Dem seat of Orkney and Shetland and can hardly be accused of being worried for his survival. In 2005 he polled 9,138 compared to just 2,511 for his closest rival.

For the record, John Hemming who was mentioned earlier in this thread did vote for a referendum. |

David Heath, the Liberal 'Democrat' MP for Somerton-Frome (who voted for an EU Treaty referendum), faces a strong challenge to his wafer-thin majority from Conservative Miss Rees-Mogg who is eurosceptic.
Whether Liberal 'Democrat' MPs voted for an EU 'Amending' Treaty referendum or not (and most did not) they are all europhiles who will (if returned at the next General Election) be back in the House of Commons voting for more UK sovereign powers to be handed to the EU. Yes, they were all in the local this week. The interesting thing is that they are not at loggerheads but all seem to strongly agree on this issue. There is a strong eurosceptic consensus amongst them and even Heath has gone from attacking the 'I want a referendum' group to saying he agrees with them and in return for his action the Conservatives, including David Heathcoat Amory are all very happy with the result and it was quite fantastic, something of the order of 90% for a referendum and the same proportion wanting to vote against the treaty. So things could not be better over this way, only the snide Labour candidate spoilt the party but he was meekly saying something like he felt he could be the only European in this area, and he is probably right.
