Default CREC update

CREC revived its purple postcard campaign in December last year thanks to a generous donation of £1,000 from Suffolk UKIP member James Carver (no, NOT Jim Carver).

Our printer delivered a first batch of 45,000 cards to us on 21 December 2007.

Today, precisely 6 weeks later, we have sold over 85,000 cards, over 2,000 every single day.

We've had enquiries from all parts of the country.

I am not as pessimistic as Matt Davies on this issue.

And neither are the tens of thousands who have already signed and sent off postcards.

Special thanks to the following:

* Tom Wise M.E.P. who has ordered 12,000 purple postcards so far

* Malcolm Wood, Regional Officer for UKIP South-West who has ordered 11,000 cards so far

* Iris Binstead of Save Our Sovereignty who's ordered 7,000, and

* Dave Cox of Southampton and Bournemouth UKIP who ordered 5,000

So sold 45,000 beyond the 4 mentioned above. given that the UK population is 60 million odd, that's not so hopeful.

Default 92,000, rising fast

In response to the last two messages, it may be relevant to point out that the R J Mansfield petition on the Prime Minister's website, also calling for a referendum on the E.U. Reform Treaty, took a whole year to accumulate fewer than 25,000 signatures, while the similar 'Daily Telegraph' petition calling for a referendum has reached 114,000 after a similar length of time.

Our tally of 86,000 cards sold was reached in just 6 weeks, and as we've sold another 6,000-plus this weekend alone, the total sold is now 92,000

this is from 2003

Back in May this year, a member of CREC’s Committee, Helene Davies, attended a meeting organised by the UK Independence Party in Cambridge. She brought up the subject of our ‘Postcards to the Queen’ campaign. A number of UKIP folk criticised the idea at the meeting, among them Jeffrey Titford M.E.P., former UKIP Leader. Despite that, the cards were eagerly taken by people at the end of the meeting. But on Wednesday this week, Jeffrey Titford took the opportunity to apologise to Helene during a public meeting at March, Cambridgeshire. Spotting Helene arriving late at a meeting, he interrupted his prepared speech with these words:

“Ladies and gentlemen, I wish to give a sincere and public apology to the lady who has just entered the room. A few months ago, I said I did not support the campaign she and some others were organising to send postcards to the Queen calling for a referendum on the European Constitution. I do not normally name drop, but I want to tell you that yesterday evening, I was in the company of Her Majesty and Princess Anne. I did not approach Her Majesty, but she approached me. She came up to me and told me that she was very worried about the implications of European Constitution. She said she had been getting an awful lot of postcards on the subject”.

Actually I think anything is worth trying at this stage.

HMTQ probably won't do anything, but if she doesn't her job will be consigned to the history books by the republicans who dominate the EU. There are 27 countries of which 7 have monarchs. Does anybody believe that ultimately the monarchies won't be abolished by the republics? I've met plenty of foreign politicians within the EU who would abolish our monarchy tomorrow.

If I were HMTQ I might just create a constitutional crisis and refuse to sign Brown's statute until there had been a referendum. What would he do? Would he rush back to Parliament and try to repeal the Act of Settlement? Would he try to run the country without Royal Assent? Would he proclaim himself Head of State? Brown is a ditherer and wouldn't know what to do. He couldn't ratify the treaty in front of the world's press without looking to be a very arrogant and stupid person.

The Queen is old and can effectively do as she wishes. If I were her I'd side with the people and tell Brown and the LibDems where they can stuff their enabling statute.

Default Over 100,000

An order received this afternoon for 5,000 purple postcards from George Cormack, UKIP Organiser for Scotland, has now taken the number of CREC postcards ordered past the 100,000 mark
