The result was so close that the Sun definitely made an impact.

I'd guarantee if the Sun swung in behind UKIP we would win several seats at the GE, more than if it was the Mail or Telegraph!

I agree - the Sun has an influence on politics.

Even if the Sun suggested that people vote UKIP in just a couple of seats where it thought UKIP could win the endorsement might be enough to persuade alot of people to vote UKIP in those constituencies.

I think you guys are mostly right about the influence of the MSM, Sun, Torygraph etc.

But I also think you have overlooked one aspect of the 1992 GE. That is Kinnock's disastrous performance at the Sheffield rally, a day or two before polling day.

Who could take the ranting Welsh windbag seriously after he tried and failed to do a Mick Jagger on the audence with his hysterical cries of "Well alright! Well alright!"

He just made himself look like a complete a*se! Which, granted, is not an uphill struggle if your name is Neil Kinnock!

Very interesting information - I've had no idea about what you've all just revealed. Thanks to all.

It was round the time murdoch had his chat with blair tht david starkey, who had a programme on talk Sport, denounced our press for trivia, and asked why they don't tell us about that meeting.

I don't recall that, but he did feature in a ridiculous Tracey Ullman pop video with his missus, falling over on the beach. You see, politics can be fun.

I rather think that the 1992 election would have been better lost for the Tories and the ERM debacle would have happened anyway, but the 1997 defeat probably wouldn't have happened, or wouldn't have been as bad. Not that I think the Tories are anything but false friends.
