They signed an agreement, yet to be ratified, for closer economic ties between the US and the EU.

What Merkel, “Shrub”, and Manuel Barroso signed was an outline agreement to launch a trans Atlantic Economic council. It’s all about trade.

I accept that Jean Monnet is of the opinion that from economic integration comes politicalintegration but he is now a quite old individual, someone who in my opinion is out of touch with European opinion of today, simply expressing his opinion.

What he fails to take into account is whether people in Europe WANT closer ties with the US.

Many certainly don’t, myself included.

I would even go so far as to suggest that probably the vast majority of Europeans would like nothing better than to have the US get out of Europe, especially its armed forces and military and Early Warning (for America) bases, and keep out.
