One of the factors making it less feasible for small parties with fewer resources to capitalise on by-elections is the current Postal Vote system. One has to be more than sharp off the mark to target Postal Voters before they despatch their votes. It's just another of the undemocratic innovations New Labour devised to restrict the scope for action of Independents and others. Indeed, it is arguable that O'Connor's vote would have been even less without the Postal Votes that had already been cast before his betrayal!

Which is what I did. I delivered all our leaflets before the postal votes came out, and that will allways be my strategy if possible.
