The Suchorzewski situation showed that members are NOT trusted to make such decisions.

If he applies, then yes, in theory, it should just follow the normal selection procedure. However, it would be a naive person who thinks that if Farage wants him on the list he won't be on the list at the top.

But the question is: what do party members think of this? As long as he applies in his own region, it isn't technically carpet-bagging, but to join a party and then apply to be an MEP almost immediately.... isn't that exactly what the NEC voted to stop in RS's case (even though this was based entirely on assumption) and exactly what Gerard Batten bitterly attacked in his letter against RS?

Could one not rewrite Gerard Batten's letter thus:
Quote:
Dear Andrew,

I don't normally reply to your emails but in this case I will make an
exception.

Mr Spink joined UKIP having fallen out with his local Tory constituency. Although he lost the Tory whip it was several weeks before he decided to make his move to UKIP. Hardly the actions of a man making an ideological stance or someone dedicated to the UKIP cause.

Now in 2008 he has applied for membership. UKIP is now about select
our candidates for the 2009 European elections, when we believe that we
are on the verge of another spectacular success. Is this a coincidence?
Smell a rat? I do.

UKIP doesn't need people like Mr Spink. If it were up to me
(which unfortunately it is not) I would refuse his membership
application. We need dedicated genuine people not highly suspect
carpetbaggers.

Please feel free to circulate this as you wish.

Yours sincerely,

Gerard Batten MEP
