Default Something good has come out of GW hysteria

So many bad things have come out of it that I'd like to say something good about it and I think it is one of those unintended consequences.

I have been following it for years now and it just dawned on me something else about it. Everywhere I look I see amateur scientists, and I'm not using this in a derogatory sense, on the contrary this is very good indeed. The situation goes something like, we have a political debate and the accepted way to win a GW debate is based on how much science do you know. This is brilliant because I'm a strong supporter of science. It is a discipline of the rational mind and I have noticed people who would never care two hoots about science before, thinking it is very boring, suddenly taking an interest. Indeed our whole country is talking science because without it the general impression now is much like the old FT advert as in 'No FT No Comment'. No science is now the socially unacceptable stance and it has done wonders for its popularity.

So interestingly it has backfired for the agenda because you will be aware if you have ever seen a school in the last ten years on how science is being dumbed down. But I speak to a lot of these kids on the Internet and I like to help them with their science and they do take an interest when it is explained to them properly. That eureka moment where something that was once a muddle fits into something where we can both understand how it works and also use the science to make predictions. It's a very powerful tool and I'm so glad it is being rediscovered by the next generation. People are compensating for the dumbing down at school by using the Internet, they know there is more than what the wishy-washy arty farty school agenda has shown them.
