Work ethic of east Europeans 'an eye opener'

From: David Jones, The Croft, Sherrif Hutton, York - 22 April 2008

I WAS very interested in the article by Steve Waters (Yorkshire Post, April 12). I have been fairly negative and of the opinion we don't need the amount of immigrants we have coming into this country at present.

That was until I had to spend some time recently working with a company that will be employing 650 Polish and other eastern European workers this year.

The owner of the business I was working with needed workers for a new venture and duly contacted the local Job Centre to ask them to help him find 500 people for a variety of roles.

He received three inquiries but no one turned up for interview which means there are 500 people in the area claiming job seekers allowance that shouldn't be.

The pay is well above the minimum wage and a good bonus is also paid which encouraged these employees to work at a speed I haven't seen in years.

They support the local economy by spending in shops, pubs and restaurants and love to buy presents to send home to their families.

There are no problems with binge drinking and violence as they are told by the employer that they would be sent home if they cause any trouble.

The people I came into contact with were extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble.

It was a real pleasure to work with them. It was also an eye opener for me to experience the work ethic of these wonderful people.
